Fountain Of Youth Ending Explained

What Luke Really Sees

By WHB KHNPublished 8 months ago 4 min read

The conclusion of Guy Ritchie's most recent adventure film, Fountain of Youth, is full with interesting people and themes. John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, who portray estranged siblings Luke and Charlotte, lead the cast of Fountain of Youth. Billionaire Owen Carver (Domhnall Gleeson) enlists Charlotte in his plot to find and use the Fountain of Youth, the fabled pool that is said to grant immortality to those who drink from it. Owen says he wants to utilize the Fountain to save his life because he has cancer and is dying.

Luke's Actual View of the Fountain of Youth

Luke chooses not to drink from the Fountain of Youth after catching a sight of Charlotte and her son Thomas in a sickly, elderly state. Luke would drain the life from his loved ones and steal it for himself by drinking from the Fountain, which, as the Elder explains, contains something that humans are still unable to fully understand. Luke later refers to the contents of the Fountain as "Everything."

What Luke is referring to as "everything" may represent what is most important to him in his life, which is his family, according to his character development. Observing them in such a condition of ruin, he comes to the realization that he only needs to reestablish his relationship with his sister and her son, not to acquire immortality or immense power. Metaphysically speaking, he could be implying that the Fountain of Youth held answers to spiritual queries or other unfathomable things.

An explanation of Charlotte's plan to "find something lost"

In Fountain of Youth's last lines, Luke and Charlotte are talking about their upcoming film. Charlotte suggests that they keep looking for lost items. After their father passed away, she and her brother found themselves at opposite ends of a spectrum; she struggled with day-to-day living and eventually divorced her husband, while he wanted to continue traveling and was unable to settle down or find inner peace. They achieve equilibrium following the film's finale.

Both Luke and Charlotte have come to recognize the importance of these experiences. Finding enigmatic relics is their passion, and it's basically what they were brought up to do. They can now do so in a way that is advantageous to everyone, including spending time as a family, going treasure hunting, and seeing the world together, thanks to Thomas.

Explaining Owen Carver's Whole Strategy and What Occurs When He Drinks From the Fountain

As the benefactor behind this hunt for hidden riches, Owen Carver starts the movie off as the heroes' ally. Claiming to have cancer, he has been stealing artwork from all over the world in an attempt to obtain hints that may help him locate the Fountain of Youth. Luke believes this claim, but Charlotte is dubious because she knows that Owen is a billionaire who has amassed his fortune by brutally acquiring other businesses, implying that he would wish to market the fountain's contents.

When we arrive at the Fountain, we find out that Owen is not suffering from cancer and that his only goal is to find the Fountain in order to gain fortune and power. He describes the liquid as the most valuable commodity in the world. But as soon as he takes a sip, it starts to sap his vitality. According to the Elder, the Fountain's effects will be more intermittent if the person drinking from it loves themselves more than anything else. As everyone else escapes, Owen Carver is left behind, leaving his fate unclear, and Esme is compelled to use the key to shut off the Fountain.

Esme's Method for Preventing Carver from Using the Fountain

The character of Esme remains enigmatic throughout Fountain of Youth. She may come across as an opponent at first, but in the end, she is trying to advance humanity. Esme follows the main characters to prevent them from getting to the Fountain, while Jamal Abbas (Arian Moayed) follows them to arrest them for art theft. She doesn't think Luke won't drink from it, but the true danger is Owen Carver.

The Elder gives Esme a key while they are speaking. This key basically serves as a backup to stop the Fountain from activating after its power has been turned on. Luke, Charlotte, and Thomas have a short window of time to flee as Esme turns the key, enclosing the Fountain in its outer shell and remembering the steps.

What Is The Elder by Stanley Tucci Actually Doing?

Although he provides additional explanation later in the film, Stanley Tucci's character, the Elder, only has a single appearance in Fountain of Youth. It appears that the Elder is in charge of a group that guards legendary locations such as the Fountain (assuming there are more). He asserts that until humanity is prepared for the Fountain's power, it must be safeguarded. Since a lot of information about this organization is omitted from the movie, it is better to think of them as magical as the place they guard.

The Fountain of Youth's True Significance Described

Luke believes that the Fountain of Youth is the ultimate goal in a lifetime of quest, thus he spends the most of the movie pursuing it. Luke has persisted in seeking adventure after adventure, evading the law and shadowy organizations, risking his life to follow what he feels is his calling, while Charlotte has tried to settle down. Although Charlotte has clearly failed to stay put and try to mend her wounds through marriage, Luke's personality isn't helping him either, since he is consistently left feeling unfulfilled.

By the end of the movie, the two siblings understand that the journey is what they have been pursuing all along. They say this repeatedly throughout the movie, but Luke doesn't understand that what he really wants isn't the solution to an archeological puzzle but rather to be with his loved ones. This realization comes when he sees a much older Charlotte in the Fountain of Youth. In the movie Fountain of Youth, the allure of great power and immortality is juxtaposed with the basic necessities that are often overlooked in life.
