Every Death In Cobra Kai

From least to most tragic, in order

By WHB KHNPublished 11 months ago 7 min read

Cobra Kai on Netflix wasn't always lighthearted; occasionally, the plots of the characters took a tragic and lethal turn. Although there weren't many deaths in the Karate Kid spinoff, a few characters did not have a happy ending. While the majority of these were villains who appeared to have it coming, a few innocent people just experienced unexpected bad luck. Naturally, these Cobra Kai deaths were viewed as much more tragic; however, the death of one particular villain served as a horribly bitter reminder of everything that could go wrong in the karate world.

The stories of all the characters in Cobra Kai are concluded in the last season. As their students embarked on their bright futures, Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso received the happily ever after they had always earned. Their dealings with villains like Terry Silver, John Kreese, and Sensei Wolf (both on and off the mat) seemed to have put an end to the days of risky dojo rivalries. The most terrible deaths in the series serve as a reminder of all the costs, even though there is no assurance that these characters won't experience additional drama following Cobra Kai.

Kwon Jae-Sung

Master Kim swiftly declared Kwon Jae-sung his new star pupil when John Kreese visited Cobra Kai to persuade him to place his students in the Sekai Taikai under the Cobra Kai banner. Kreese made Kwon even more aggressive than he was already, making him a formidable opponent. Kwon, like every other student of Kreese in the Karate Kid series, developed this level of fighting prowess via unrestrained fury. This was always risky, but when Kwon fell on his own knife out of rage in Cobra Kai season 6, part 2, it was finally made clear why.

In Cobra Kai, Kwon was by no means a popular character. He was a fairly vile bully who went to considerable measures to irritate his rivals. This is demonstrated by the fact that he tried to harm Axel with a knife. The disturbing facts about his death, however, were that he might have been any of the antagonists from the Karate Kid series. Chozen Toguchi, Johnny Lawrence, and even Miguel, Robby, and Tory on their "bad" days. Kwon died as a child as a result of John Kreese's teachings on violence. The Cobra Kai tragedy had a significant impact and altered almost everything in the years that followed.

Tory's Mom

Early on in Tory's Cobra Kai story, it was made clear that her mother was gravely ill. Tory was under a lot of pressure because she had to support her family financially while still attempting to be a typical adolescent. Since it was revealed that Tory's mother had greatly improved by the events of season 6, part 2, it appeared that all of Tory's hard work had paid off in Cobra Kai. According to the doctor, things were starting to improve and Tory might get to live with a normal family and a healthy mother.

In Cobra Kai season 6, part 2, shortly after receiving this wonderful news, Tory came home to discover her mother had passed out. Tory's entire world collapsed when the hospital declared Mrs. Nichols dead. The ensuing flashbacks to some of Tory's most memorable talks with her mother made this—possibly one of the most heartbreaking scenes in Cobra Kai—even worse.

Betsy

Prior to his departure for the Vietnam War, John Kreese was in a relationship with Betsy. Betsy was dating the school football star and bully when Kreese first met her; it was later discovered that the bully had been abusive to Betsy. After Kreese saved her, they fell in love right away. The lovers dutifully corresponded during Kreese's deployment, with her promising to wait for him while he was away at war. However, Betsy was killed instantly in a car accident while visiting family; Captain Turner concealed this information from Kreese.

It wasn't until he and Turner were fighting over the snake pit that Kreese found out about Betsy's passing. Even after American troops arrived to liberate the Viet Cong camp, Kreese's anger and grief drove him to kill his superior. Betsy's passing was tragic in every way. She was a young lady who had a promising future before she passed away in a strange accident. But given how it forced Kreese to turn into the villain he never ought to have been, the death of this Cobra Kai character is all the more horrible.

John Kreese

Although John Kreese was The Karate Kid's first antagonist, it was clear from Cobra Kai that he had some room for improvement. However, when Kreese recovered Master Kim's knife in South Korea in Cobra Kai season 6, part 2, it appeared that this would not occur. He symbolically buried his last remnants of humanity when he killed a hallucination of Johnny Lawrence. But everything changed when Johnny saved Kreese from Silver and Kwon's deaths at the Sekai Taikai.

In Cobra Kai season 6, part 3, Kreese realized that he was responsible for Kwon's death, not only because Kreese's knife had stabbed him but also because of the sensei's violent teachings. Kreese became aware of the detrimental effect he had on Johnny's life as a result of this. In order to gain atonement, Kreese sacrificed his life to defeat Terry Silver and save Johnny's family. The death of this Cobra Kai villain was tragic because Kreese had only recently begun to make the right choices as a human, but it was also incredibly badass.

Captain George Turner

During the Vietnam War, Terry Silver and John Kreese were accompanied by George Turner. This vicious man revealed that he had learned the "No Mercy" tenet from Master Kim Sun-yung in South Korea, and he was the first to teach it to the Karate Kid villain. Despite his tough leadership style, Turner recognized John Kreese's potential. But when the latter refused to give up the life of one of his colleagues, everything fell apart, and the Viet Cong captured Turner, Kreese, and Silver.

In Cobra Kai, the Viet Cong prisoners were made to fight to the death over a pit of poisonous snakes, and Kreese offered to take on Captain Turner in order to save Silver. Before the Captain disclosed that Kreese's girlfriend Betsy had passed away, Kreese was reluctant to give fighting Turner his all. It was selfless in a slightly perverse way, as Turner told Kreese the truth at this precise moment to make him feel better about killing his captain. The real tragedy is that the captain might have survived if his subordinate had made a choice, as rescuers arrived just before Kreese killed Turner.

Kim Sun-Yung

In a sense, Master Kim Sun-yung was the original founder of Cobra Kai and the martial arts instructor for Terry Silver and John Kreese. Despite being referenced throughout the Karate Kid series, this character wasn't formally introduced until Cobra Kai season 5. It soon becomes evident that Master Kim is a cruel and vicious instructor, which is how he created such dangerous combatants. Much of what has gone wrong for the heroes of Cobra Kai and The Karate Kid can be traced back to Master Kim's evil ways.

In Cobra Kai season 6, part 3, Kim Sun-yung's order for his granddaughter Kim Da-eun to kill John Kreese necessitated his death. Sensei Kim realized right away that her grandfather didn't give a damn about Kwon's death at the Sekai Taikai, and that this would only drive their students farther down the dark path. Once more, the only tragic aspect of Master Kim's passing would be that his granddaughter, who had learned the lethal method from him, was responsible.

Terry Silver

Terry Silver swiftly emerged as Cobra Kai's main antagonist. When it was revealed that he and John Kreese were co-founders of Cobra Kai, he was first introduced in The Karate Kid Part III. Even back then, Silver had a unique ability to enter Daniel's mind, but Cobra Kai elevated his villainy to a new plane. Naturally, Silver's death was extremely satisfying because he turned into the most unredeemable villain in the Netflix series.

In Cobra Kai season 6, part 3, Silver was already dying, so the yacht explosion essentially only advanced the timeline by a few weeks or months. The fact that Silver was murdered by his old best friend, the man who had saved his life during the Vietnam War, is the most tragic aspect of his passing. Nevertheless, Terry Silver was eliminated by John Kreese in the most spectacular manner imaginable, and his passing made it possible for Daniel and Johnny to have a happy ending. In the end, no love was lost in this situation.

Dennis de Guzman

One of Terry Silver's goons, Dennis de Guzman (William Christopher Ford), was first shown in The Karate Kid Part III. He assisted the Cobra Kais in torturing Daniel and Mike Barnes in demolishing Mr. Miyagi's Bonsai store. In season six of Cobra Kai, De Guzman made a comeback by abducting Daniel on Terry Silver's orders. But in the end, Daniel had no trouble dealing with De Guzman.

De Guzman passed away on Terry Silver's yacht in part three of season six of Cobra Kai. In order to ensure that the Iron Dragons won the Sekai Taikai, he had been told to go back to the land and abduct Johnny's wife and daughter, which was Silver's insurance. But John Kreese showed up and knocked De Guzman down the stairs before he could get very far. Whether De Guzman's death was caused by the yacht explosion or a head wound that was observed is unclear in Cobra Kai. In the end, it didn't really matter. De Guzman's death had little effect because there was nothing admirable about the evil man.
