Who Are The Real Do-Gooders?

By WHB KHNPublished 11 months ago 5 min read

Finally available, DreamWorks Dog Man explains the entire film's conclusion and how it paves the way for a possible Dog Man 2 sequel. Dog Man, which is based on the book series of the same name, is about a police officer who, following a fatal explosion, has his body attached to a dog's head. Then, in order to defeat the evil Petey the Cat, the upgraded Dog Man must transform into the ultimate police officer. There are still unanswered questions like these because Dog Man takes many more turns than many viewers anticipated.

The world is in danger as the psychic mechanical fish, Flippy the Fish, resurrects at the end of Dog Man. It is necessary for Dog Man, Petey, and Li'l Petey to work together in order to prevent Flippy from destroying all good people. Dog Man and Petey save Li'l Petey after Flippy first kidnaps him. Dog Man and Li'l Petey then have to save Petey after Flippy kidnaps him. Li'l Petey then persuades Flippy to stop being a villain. Petey is pardoned, Flippy is put in jail, and Li'l Petey chooses to live with Dog Man.

Lil Petey helps Petey the cat turn into a do-gooder.

In Dog Man, there is no such thing as good or evil, and while Petey the Cat begins the movie as the ultimate criminal mastermind, he eventually transforms into a do-gooder. Petey's only objective in Dog Man is to take down the title hero police officer. But Petey's heart softens when Li'l Petey is introduced. Petey initially believes that the young clone would be equally as evil as him, so he questions why Li'l Petey is so kind. But this, along with Li'l Petey's generosity, helps Petey see that he doesn't have to be this way, and he starts to doubt his previous bad actions.

Petey's perspective changes after Flippy captures Li'l Petey. He had come to love the young clone, even though he had always wanted to get rid of Li'l Petey. Following Li'l Petey's kidnapping, Petey teams up with Dog Man, his bitterest adversary, and the two of them work together to stop Flippy. Petey even consents to give his life to save Li'l Petey, but fortunately, he is spared before being thrown into the volcano. Petey is prepared to go back to prison after defeating Flippy. But he begins his life of heroism when he finds out that the governor has forgiven him for his good deeds.

The Reasons Behind Lil Petey's Decision to Live With Dog Man

Li'l Petey is caught between two worlds throughout Dog Man. Dog Man loves Petey and wants to be a good father figure to him after finding him abandoned, even though he is unaware that he is a clone. In the meantime, Petey pushes his evil worldview on the young cat in an attempt to teach Li'l Petey to be a villain like him. Li'l Petey returns to live with Petey after living with Dog Man for a while, demonstrating the benefits of having both parents. Li'l Petey must decide where he wants to go by the end of Dog Man.

At the end of the film, Li'l Petey makes the decision to move in with Dog Man. Li'l Petey understands that Petey has only intended to use him for evil ends throughout the movie, even though Petey has now turned into a do-gooder. Even though Dog Man was unaware of his connection to his arch-enemy, Dog Man has shown genuine concern for him in the interim. At the end of the film, the former Dog Man villain is seen partying with the rest of the city, suggesting that Li'l Petey and Dog Man are still together even though Petey may have chosen Dog Man.

Will Lil Petey turn into a villain in adulthood?

Throughout Dog Man's first two acts, Li'l Petey is a ray of hope, but by the film's conclusion, he starts to take a frightening turn. Li’l Petey starts to see the world the same way Petey does, thinking it is full of weeds, pollution, and mud puddles. This suggests that Li'l Petey might have a darker side and puts the character on a path toward villainy. But in the end, Dog Man puts Li'l Petey back on the correct track. It remains possible that Li'l Petey will revert to his clone father's worldview and turn into a villain in a future sequel.

Where Is Petey's Father Now?

Grampa, Li'l Petey's grandfather and Petey's father, makes an appearance in Dog Man after Li'l Petey calls him to try to mend their relationship. Li'l Petey quickly learns that Grampa isn't a very good person because he constantly makes fun of Petey. Petey and Li'l Petey see Grampa driving off in a moving truck at the end of the movie. When they get back to the lab, they discover that everything has been taken by Grampa, with the exception of the books written by Li'l Petey. Dog Man never tells us where Grampa is going or what his plan is, though he might make a comeback in a follow-up.

The End of Dog Man

Dog Man tells a tale about nature versus nurture and has an unexpectedly endearing message. Petey thinks that his clone will be as evil as he is, so he clones himself. To Petey's surprise, however, Dog Man's love transforms Li'l Petey into a do-gooder. Dog Man contends that a person's environment shapes their worldview, and Li'l Petey notes that Petey's antagonistic inclinations might have resulted from his strained relationship with his father. Li'l Petey's love starts to save Petey, and Dog Man demonstrates that anyone can change.

How Dog Man (Based on the Books) Sets Up Dog Man 2

With so many different stories to choose from for Dog Man 2, the story of the titular cop may not end with Dog Man. Dog Man draws inspiration from the different characters and books in the franchise to create an original story, rather than directly adapting any of the books. Big Jim, a character that appears in the Cat Jail scene of the film, is one intriguing aspect that could be developed further. In the Dog Man books, he develops into a significant character; in fact, the titles of the thirteenth and fourteenth books contain his name.

Given that Petey appears frequently as a villain in the series, Dog Man 2 might turn him into a villain once more. But this would undermine the first film's themes. Given his motivations and whereabouts, it would make more sense for Petey's father to be the antagonist in the follow-up. One of the other antagonists in the Dog Man franchise might also be referenced in a follow-up, creating a completely different plot.
