Andy's less serious romances

Andy Taylor appeared to be a ladies' man on The Andy Griffith Show. Throughout the eight years of the series, there was continuous romance, and six women became significant figures in his life. There were also the "fun girls" Daphne (played by Jean Carson) and Skippy (portrayed by Joyce Jamison).

Fans may recognize these actresses from many television series, including The Twilight Zone. Daphne liked the Sheriff fans recall her husky voice saying "Hello Doll." Skippy was fond of Deputy Barney Fife (D0n Knotts) who she referred to as Birney. The fun girls made three appearances in Mayberry. Once each in seasons three, four, and five.

The single life for Andy Taylor

Both goodtime girls seemingly were unaware that their affections weren’t reciprocated. They were eager to dance and party, much to the annoyance of the Sheriff and his deputy. In addition to Skippy and Daphne there were other women who did not stick around.

Karen Moore

Karen and Mary

Andy had single dates with Karen Moore (Gail Davis) in the season 1 episode The Perfect Woman and Mary Simpson (Sue Ann Langdon) in the season 2 episode Three's a Crowd. It's unclear why neither of these women remained on the show.

The high school reunion

Sheriff Taylor also briefly entertained reuniting with his high school sweetheart, Sharon DeSpain (Peggy McCay), in Class Reunion in season 3. When Sharon walked in, everyone stopped and looked as if they thought the two would reconnect. Unfortunately, they realized they had different priorities.

Andy and Mary

The lady druggist

In season 1 of The Andy Griffith Show, Andy dated Ellie Walker (played by Elinor Donahue). They did not initially hit it off when she first moved to Mayberry to work in her uncle’s pharmacy. Fans enjoyed these two together, especially in the memorable episode The Christmas Story.

Donahue left when her contract was up and did not return in season 2. She was not mentioned again and Andy went on with his life. She later said she did not believe Andy and Ellie had chemistry but many fans disagreed.

Peggy and Helen

In season 3, Andy was sweet on Peggy McMillan (Joanna Moore), who portrayed Nurse Peggy, but the romance did not last long. In Opie's Rival, the young Taylor tries to sabotage Andy and Peggy's relationship by not relaying messages from one to the other, but they work it out in the end.

Later in the same season, Aneta Corsaut joined the cast as Opie Taylor's (Ronnie Howard) school teacher, Helen Crump. She and Andy began as friends and eventually started dating.

Twice, Barney Fife (Don Knotts) spread false rumors that Andy and Helen were engaged. At one point, Opie had a crush on Miss Crump until he found out she was his father's girl. The couple dated until the end of The Andy Griffith Show and were married on the spin-off, Mayberry RFD. They later had a son, Andy Jr.

Romance off-screen for Andy Griffith

Andy Griffith married Barbara Bray Edwards on August 22, 1949. They adopted a son, Andy Samuel Griffith, and a daughter, Dixie Nan Griffith, and the couple divorced in 1972. His second wife was Solica Cassuto, a Greek actress. They were married from 1973 to 1981. Griffith married Cindy Knight on April 12, 1983. They remained married until Griffith's death.

There have been rumors over the years that Griffith, who was married, and Corsaut had a long-time affair. If true, the on-screen chemistry was real off the set. Andy is said to have proposed while he was still married, allegedly more than once, but Aneta said she turned him down. They remained friends long after the relationship ended.
