Coming Soon on Netflix: Park Chan-Wook’s Poignant War Film “Uprising”

Multi-awarded writer-producer Park Chan-Wook, the genius behind Decision to Leave, returns this year with a historical war film that may change how you look at the Joseon Era, and it’s coming to Netflix soon. Joining him in this endeavor is director Kim Sang-Man, who made the unforgettable thriller Midnight FM. Here’s what you need to know about Uprising.

Uprising’s Plot

Uprising is an upcoming South Korean historical war-action film that depicts the lives of two childhood friends who became adversaries during the Japanese invasions of Korea. It is set in the Joseon era, during a tumultuous time in the aftermath of war.

The film takes viewers on a gripping journey between Cheon Yeong, an enslaved person with remarkable martial prowess struggling to break free from unjust servitude, and his enslaver, Jong-Ryeo, a scion of Joseon’s most influential military family. The film promises to deliver angst, betrayal, and love in a time wherein the two sides couldn’t be even more different.

Star-Studded Cast

Uprising is comprised of some of kdrama‘s biggest stars. Gang Dong-Won, famous for his roles in Broker and Peninsula, plays the role of Cheon-Yeong. Park Jeong-min, who previously worked with Park Chan-Wook in Decision to Leave, plays the role of Jong-Ryeo. Cha Seung-Won, the star of Night in Paradise and Believer, will play the famous role of King Seonjo.

Kim Shin-Rock remembered for his Hellbound and Sweet Home roles, stars as Beom-Dong. Jin Sun-Kyu, who starred in Space Sweepers as Ja-ryeong, and Jung Sung-Il, known for his breakout role in the Netflix series The Glory, is Genshin.

Working With Netflix

During a roundtable discussion with Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos in June 2023, Park Chan-Wook explained that he had written the screenplay Uprising for a long time and only completed it in 2019. Because it’s a period martial arts flick, he said it required a certain level of investment. Hence, he worked well with the streaming giant Netflix.

Director Kim Sang-Man and Park Chan-Wook teamed up to bring a new level of action spectacle. The acclaimed South Korean filmmakers invite audiences to return to the Joseon era, the final imperial period in Korean history. The film examines how the chaos of war impacts personal relationships between two friends who later become enemies.

Conclusion

Uprising is building up to become one of South Korea’s biggest films in 2024. Already setting high expectations, Uprising will have its world premiere at the 29th Busan International Film Festival on October 2. This will be the first time a streaming platform movie will open Asia’s largest film festival. But worry and wait not because Netflix announced that Uprising will be available for streaming on the platform by October 11.
