Bunny Mask #3

Aftershock Comics 2021

Written by Paul Tobin

Illustrated by Andrea Mutti

Lettered by Taylor Esposito

With armed intruders in his apartment and an eerie supernatural creature in his bed, Tyler Severin feels like his life couldn’t get much worse. Yet the mysterious Snitch has more revelations for Tyler, secrets about Bee Foster that lead back to caves where Bunny Mask was found, and a revelation that Tyler isn’t the only one who hears the Snitch’s voice.

I am so confused, and I kind of like it that way, because at first I thought Bee had all her teeth filed into pointed ends and became the girl in the Bunny Mask. Then Bee shows up many years later as an artist and she meets up with Tyler and they kind of start dating. Meanwhile the girl in the Bunny Mask shows up in his life again at this time, are she and Bee the same person or entity? Now this issue things get taken a step further thanks to what Sheriff Tate discovered last issue so if everything wasn’t already confusing well forget about it now because it’s basically a free-for-all in “guess who’s coming to dinner,” or bed as the case may be. It is like this weird game of clue where you don’t know the players or the rules but you're too invested and engaged to care.

I am a fan of the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter continues to flesh them out in some wondrous and intriguing ways. The pacing here is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story we are left awe struck by the turn of events we see.

I greatly appreciate the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. Ever since the first issue nothing has ever been what it seemed to be and now that we’ve got Sheriff Tate in town, his revelations, Tyler’s experiences and questions the depth, dimension and complexity to this story has been dialed up past 10! How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow is exceptionally well achieved.

I am in love with the interiors here. Andrea is so talented and how we see the linework with its varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this detailed work that we see is marvellous. The creativity and imagination, centring around the artwork and Bunny Mask, is pretty amazing. That we get backgrounds throughout the book makes me a happy camper, plus how they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is fantastic. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective shows a masterful eye for storytelling. The colour work is brilliantly rendered. How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show a real understanding of how colour works and how to maximise its effects perfectly.

I have no idea what’s going on here and honestly I wouldn’t have it any other way because I want to think I’m smart enough to figure it all out before it’s revealed. In the meantime this has some of the craziest and most impressive writing and characterisation wrapped up in these mind numbing interiors that created this little world where Alice would feel right at home. Exciting, fresh, fun and incredibly intriguing this is what keeps us coming back time and time again not only to this series but to Aftershock as well.
