The 2025 summer blockbuster season will have a number of extremely popular films, including Jurassic World Rebirth and James Gunn's Superman. Hollywood studios have been releasing their high-concept tentpole films in the summer in an attempt to replicate Jaws' success ever since it became the highest-grossing film ever filmed in the summer of 1975. The highest-grossing films of a particular year usually appear in the summer. Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2 were the films this year. It was Barbenheimer last year. It was Top Gun: Maverick the year before.
Although summer doesn't officially begin until June, the summer blockbuster season usually begins in May and lasts until September. The summer blockbuster season of 2025 is looking to be fantastic. Marvel Studios is set to release two much awaited superhero films. Leslie Nielsen passed away, and Liam Neeson is taking over as Frank Drebin. Tom Cruise is making what may be his last appearance as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, the Smurfs are back, and Gunn is finally debuting his DC Universe. There are several intriguing films scheduled for the summer of 2025.
Thunderbolts, May 2
Captain America: Brave New World, the next big-screen production from Marvel Studios, will open on February 14 of next year. On May 2, Marvel will release Thunderbolts*, its first summer blockbuster. In Thunderbolts*, a group of antiheroes are gathered to carry out covert operations that the government doesn't want documented officially. This is essentially Marvel's version of DC's Suicide Squad franchise. A-list celebrities abound in the ensemble cast, which primarily consists of powerful, hypercapable mercenaries without many superpowers.
Leading the charge as Yelena Belova is Florence Pugh, supported by David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, and Sebastian Stan, all of whom are returning to their MCU roles. With a more semi-grounded action thriller than the typical Marvel movie, the Thunderbolts* previews have been thrilling. Expendables will outnumber Avengers.
The Smurfs Movie, July 18
Appropriately named The Smurfs Movie, which opens in theaters on July 18, 2025, will bring the Smurfs back to the big screen next summer. This will be the first Smurfs film since Smurfs: The Lost Village in 2017, and it will be a musical. At one point, it was even titled The Smurfs Musical. In addition to producing the movie and co-writing and recording the songs, Rihanna is leading a stellar voice cast in the role of Smurfette.
Chris Miller, the director of Puss in Boots, and Pam Brady, the writer of South Park, are among the top animators working on it. It looks like it will be a fantastic reboot. There are a lot of major films coming out next summer, but The Smurfs Movie should fill the gap left by Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 this summer in terms of family films.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, May 23
The trailer for the recently released Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning was released by Paramount. The malevolent A.I./missing submarine plotline that was begun in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will be continued in this installment. The title's finality seems to imply that this will be the last Mission: Impossible movie, or at the very least, the last one with Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, even though it isn't stated as such.
The box office failure of Dead Reckoning Part One was a major factor in Paramount's decision to remove "Part Two" from the title. However, that is primarily due to the fact that it was released immediately following Barbenheimer, the unpredicted cultural phenomena. When The Final Reckoning is released on May 23, 2025, it may still be a huge smash since it teases a final journey.
Freakier Friday , August 8
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are getting back together for a Freaky Friday sequel, more than 20 years after the first film. In the follow-up, titled Freakier Friday, Anna Coleman, who is now a mother, will switch bodies with her mother, Tess, once more. The studio has confirmed that the film will be released in theaters on August 8, 2025, despite original rumors that it would be released directly to Disney+. Shortly after, it will be streamed on Disney+.
Freaky Friday has been made four times, but this is the first time a sequel has been made for one of them. This follow-up might be a tremendous box office triumph because of the enormous fondness for the Freaky Friday remake from 2003. Like Anna, those who grew up watching that film will now be able to take their own children to see the follow-up.
F1 , June 27
On June 27, 2025, Brad Pitt's F1 film, which is titled F1, will be released in theaters. The story follows Pitt's character, a former Formula One racer, as he returns from retirement to coach a young rookie. Joseph Kosinski, director of Top Gun: Maverick, promises the same immersive cinematic action as that film, with cameras installed inside fast cars to put viewers in the middle of the action.
This is Apple's most recent effort to enter the blockbuster industry following the box office failure of Fly Me to the Moon and Argylle. F1 is clamoring to be shown on the big screen, led by the filmmaker of Top Gun: Maverick. It has the potential to be a huge hit if it is as good as the Top Gun sequel.
The Battle Of Baktan Cross , August 8
On August 8, 2025, Paul Thomas Anderson's most recent film, The Battle of Baktan Cross, will be released in theaters. With a blockbuster budget double the lifetime gross of Anderson's highest-grossing film, it's his most costly feature to date. With its abundance of action, explosions, and vehicle chases, it is also regarded as his most popular film to date. That's all conjecture for now, but it sounds intriguing.
Warner Bros. is relying on Leonardo DiCaprio's star power to make the film a success, and he is heading the cast. According to rumors, P.T.A.'s upcoming movie is a modern take on Thomas Pynchon's Vineland, adapting the Reagan-era parody to the political atmosphere of the United States today. The Battle of Baktan Cross might be quite divisive if that's the case, but it might also be a fascinating movie.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps , July 25
The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel Studios' third film of 2025, will be released on July 25th, a few months after Thunderbolts*. Since Disney purchased 21st Century Fox in 2019, an MCU Fantastic Four revival has been in the works, but it has taken several years to complete. In First Steps, the Fantastic Four will battle to protect Earth from Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer, in a retro-futuristic setting reminiscent of the 1960s.
Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm are among the talented actors Kevin Feige has brought together to create Marvel's first family. For a fantastic Fantastic Four film, the bar has been set fairly low. First Steps has the potential to be a huge smash if it can surpass its predecessor.
The Naked Gun , August 1
On August 1, 2025, a reboot of the Naked Gun series will return to theaters. Leslie Nielsen will be replaced as the star by Liam Neeson, who will play Frank Drebin, Jr., who is most likely the son of the original Frank Drebin. Paul Walter Hauser will portray his commander, Ed Hocken, while Pamela Anderson will play his love interest. Details of the plot are being kept under wraps, but it's probably going to be another ridiculous, absurdist parody of police procedures.
Although a Naked Gun revival sans Nielsen may seem unlikely, there is a lot of amazing talent behind the camera on this one: Akiva Schaffer of The Lonely Island is directing the new film, which is based on a concept by Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy. In recent years, there haven't been many major comedies. The comic genre may finally return if the Naked Gun revival is a success.
Jurassic World Rebirth , July 2
No Jurassic Park or Jurassic World film has ever done poorly at the box office. Even the most recent one, Jurassic World Dominion, made over $1 billion at the film office despite receiving harsh criticism from critics. Universal had no intention of letting this franchise stop, even though the film was marketed as the conclusion to the Jurassic saga. On July 2, 2025, the studio will release Jurassic World Rebirth.
With Mahershala Ali and Scarlett Johansson at the top of the cast, Jurassic World Rebirth has a lot of celebrity support. The script was written by David Koepp, the original author of Jurassic Park, and Godzilla's Gareth Edwards is directing. Regardless of its quality, Jurassic World Rebirth will be a success, but it appears that this one might be a comeback.
Superman , July 11
James Gunn and Peter Safran were named co-chairs and co-CEOs of the newly established DC Studios more than two years ago. They were entrusted by Warner Bros. to dismantle the DCEU and create a brand-new, DC Comics-based movie world from the ground up. A new Superman relaunch, written and directed by Gunn and starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, will eventually debut the revamped DC Universe on July 11 of next summer.
Gunn's Superman film will focus on Clark Kent's attempt to make sense of his Kryptonian ancestry and his adopted childhood in Smallville, Kansas, rather than repeating the character's unduly familiar origin tale. According to leaked set shots and first-look pictures, Gunn's Superman appears to be far more upbeat and cheerful than the one in the SnyderVerse. Superman might succeed at a time when people are in dire need of inspirational tales and fun diversion.
