Barry Season 3 Episode 7 'Candy Asses' Review

Everybody is turning to the dark side.

I have some news. It’s not good, so you should listen.

Candy Asses picks up right where the events from the last episode concluded. Suffering from the ill effects of the poison, Barry finds himself on an island. He is not alone. Meanwhile, Sally’s career is in trouble. As Gene’s new career is picking up, Fuches is taken into police custody.

Everybody is turning to the dark side. The first thing I want to say about this episode is the use of incredibly deep symbolism utilized for one scene. I will talk more about that later. Drama is escalating fast. Next week is the season finale and a lot is going to go down.

The acting by each member of the cast; main, supporting, or minor is well done. Small parts have a huge impact. For example, the small story with the director was integral. Ensemble had an important role in this episode. Michael Bofshever’s delivery of a tear-jerking monologue is enough to make your chest ache.

Let’s start our talk with Gene, the only character who has been going uphill. Looks like Barry in fact made it up to him. He has a new show where he is an acting teacher. Henry Winkler is a talented actor. I enjoyed watching him in this episode.

Oh boy, is Sally in trouble. Shouting vulgar remarks that were recorded and posted on the web, Sally’s acting career is not looking good. Sarah Goldberg conveys utter ferocity in Sally. Similar to one of the final shots of season 2, Sally is now heading to the dark side. That one shot and Goldberg’s acting gave me goosebumps.

I feel like Hank doesn’t have that much to do this season. Still, I felt so bad for his character. Here for his trademark comedy, Hank is on a mission to find Cristobal. Kidnapped and trapped alone in a dark prison, Carrigan masters his talents as a dramatic actor.

Finally, Fuches has been caught in his lies. Yes, his idea backfired on him. I don’t know how Stephen Root does it but he evokes outstanding delivery of his chilling monologues. Renewing some news to Albert (James Hiroyuki Liao), Fuches knows how to analyze people, particularly when he is aware of their background.

Now, onto Barry. Barry has been poisoned. Having no dialogue, Hader is a tremendous non-verbal actor. Acting is all about your physical performance, too. He bears many subtle physical touches like his nose flaring and breathing.

Sick and experiencing ill effects, Barry wanders onto an island where several significant people are. Could this be a turning point in Barry’s life? This part of the episode is so deep that it made me feel a mix of peace and sadness.

Bill Hader’s use of symbolism is one of my favorite elements of his direction. Just the silence in this scene was so effective. Water is significant to Barry. In season 1, whenever he’s upset, Barry sits by the water.

In his hallucinations, Barry drifts off onto this island where significant people are. Be on the lookout for several familiar cameos that we have seen across the entire series. I was giddy to see one character who was my favorite in season 1. However, since these are the people who Barry murdered in the past, why isn’t Janice present?

I know I say this every time but I am waiting on the edge of my seat for the next episode. How are things going to go down? This season finale is going to be one heavy show. I cannot wait.
