Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response or ASMR videos are a part of the Zeitgeist of the 2020’s.
But what about ASMR videos make them so tantalizing?

I was scrolling through TikToks as a “Gen X '' person does and I came across an ASMR video by Trisha Paytas. I seldom watched ASMR videos before Paytas’ Tiktok because honestly, I didn’t understand the hype. However, I was instantly raptured in a state of tranquility. ASMR content creators speak in a soft, hushed tone and say pleasant words to help viewers fall asleep, reduce anxiety, or simply relax.

There are characteristics of an ASMR video. A microphone is a must; Some ASMR content creators place a microphone on their desk directly in front of them or they attach it to their camera. They touch various objects or 'props' near their microphone to emphasize the sound effect. Some have especially long nails so their finger tapping produces a very unique sound.
Makeup ASMR videos is an example of an interesting take on the art form. The viewer receives a simulated experience of getting their makeup done. While, ASMR videos are audibly stimulating, they can also be visually appealing to the eyes. For example, when a creator dips their makeup brush into some eye makeup, the powder flies into the air and glints of sparkles catch our gaze. Then they 'apply' the makeup on our eyes and follow through with the rest of the makeup routine.

The overall sensation is therapeutic because it' s like 'easy listening'. The effect of watching an ASMR video has on the new generation is like the kind of radio stations, our dads would listen to on their way to work. ASMR creators radiate empathy, compassion, and gentility which is another reason why their content is so widely- consumed. The audience is treated with such care and kindness that it's gravitating.
What makes ASMR videos more entertaining? When content creators collaborate with other people, the viewer is entertained by different personalities.Creators are distinguished by their wacky style, or colorful hair for example. Some adopt different characters or occupations. She pretended to be a nurse so she prescribed vitamins to her audience then tapped her nails on the plastic container of vitamins for that ASMR effect. They radiate the same kindliness of a real nurse through the screen.

There’s food ASMR videos where the creator records themselves eating. Some are also muckbangs where they interact with the audience as well. The popular food of choice are generally crab legs, and lobster because they make loud noises when cracked. There's so much content on cultural food and snacks. Since the internet is global, the viewer can learn through said content. Food ASMR videos generate millions of views on Youtube, and they are just as popular across all social media. Why is it so entertaining to watch people chew? For some, that's a pet peeve, however food ASMR content creators have made a successful career out of this.
Beauty ASMR videos were recently on the rise. There was a trend on Tiktok where users replicated the character, Cassie’s, beauty routine on the Hulu show, Euphoria. The soundbite that was widely used was that of sounds from applying facial, clay, and or bubble masks. That is, they amplify the sound effects from washing their face, applying facial wash, and lotion, etc. It's mesmerizing to watch each step done to completion, and thus it's inspired me to take my skincare seriously.
Some ASMR videos don’t include talking but they are just as entertaining. This type of content is usually filmed at a downwards angle, however the traditional filming method of front-facing the camera is also widely used amongst ASMR creators. The sounds the user produces are crisp. Generally, creators incorporate trendy gadgets and stuff in their videos, however, they also use the most random of things too.
