A Fairy Tale Fail: Reign of the Seven Spell Blades

A Spoil-Free Anime Review

By animetipzPublished about a year ago 4 min read

If you have read any of my past blogs you should know by now there is no reason for my choice in anime. I will see a cool-looking anime that's short, And I watch it. I have found some of my favorite anime this way but sometimes I come across some that are a miss for me. However, I am cursed. I have to finish an anime even if I don’t like it. I want to be able to say I hated the whole show and that I didn’t just give up on it. I know that is a weird mindset but it is just how I am wired.

As the year comes to a close I start looking at the list of anime I have started throughout the year and watch the last episodes to finish them and start the new year fresh. This was one of those anime I started in January of this year. I tried to finish it again in the middle of the year, but finally just finished it. Let’s understand why I thought this anime was a miss for me.

I have written a list of anime I wish I had never seen in 2 parts, check them out if you want to see a list of anime that I have finished and still hated.

Please don’t hate on people who don’t like the same anime as you. I want to write an honest review of my opinions and take it with a grain of salt. If I just wrote about all the anime I love I don’t think that would be honest of me. I’d say 1 out of 30 anime series I watch I end up not liking. If you like one of the shows I didn’t I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. We all gravitate and see things differently, And hearing different perspectives can be eye-opening. That’s something I love about anime. There is something for everyone.

Reign of the Seven Spell Blades

Storyline: When a boy and girl meet at a prestigious magic school, the curtain to a supreme fantasy series opens! This year’s new students arrive at Kimberley Magic School. What meets them there is a brilliant parade of cherry blossoms in full bloom and magical creatures. They don’t know — this academy is a living demon’s shrine where no one’s life is guaranteed. A school fantasy about spellblades!

Info: 15 episodes

Genre: Fantasy, Action

Rated: TV-14

My first thoughts were positive. The first few episodes were very entertaining and had a unique twist on a basic fantasy concept. It’s just like Harry Potter except they use their magic through their wands. I thought the characters were pretty basic, although they end up getting way too much depth later on. After episode 4 I was bored and stopped watching for over 6 months. It wasn’t attention-grabbing enough, felt drawn out, and unnecessarily complex.

After 6 months I was bored and wanted to pick the show back up and I watched another 5 episodes. The middle story arc was the best part of the show. It had a lot of depth, showed the magic in epic fights, and had a dark twist. After that arc, however, the show went downhill for me.

A lot of the story went to unnecessary backstories, which almost felt as if the show was trama dumping. I think we should learn about the characters' backstories, however, when EVERY character has a traumatic past it makes them less impactful. They should have kept the main girl and guys past and that's it. It meant the most to the story and had the biggest plot twists. But everyone had a trauma that downplayed their backstories.

I had a hard time with the characters that would switch between genders. I love Ranma 1/2 and they know how to make the gender-swapping part of the show but not take over the whole show. I felt as if the character had depth and then they focused all the attention on the fact he can now turn into a she. Just felt forced and unnatural to me and didn’t add any value to the storyline.

The animation was basic. They were able to give us some cool fight scenes but aside from that it felt like any other anime you’d see. Nothing unique or special about it. Basic animation doesn’t bother me but some shows can make up for bad storylines or characters by at least being entertaining to watch.

Ratings:

IMDb:4.5/10

Anime-Planet: 3.3/5

My Review: I wouldn’t recommend this show. If you want to watch a Harry Potter-like fantasy I’d recommend Mashle. I thought this show had a lot of potential and creativity, but they tried to fit too much in which ended up drowning the story.

I had no idea something so cute and wholesome existed. I can watch horror like it is nothing, but give me a cute romance and I’m screaming into the pillow (Literally)

Exploring the Success of Live Action One Piece Adaptation

This is the first time the anime has been done well in a live-action. Picking such a popular and iconic anime is a bold move. If you make any mistake, you will have a huge flop. I can tell the creators put a lot of research and thought into this first season.

Bye for now!
