Reviving Ranma 1/2: Classic Anime Gets a Fresh Modern Look

Will it be able to keep its classic charm?

By animetipzPublished about a year ago 3 min read

I have wanted to watch Ranma 1/2 for as long as I can remember. The length was the only thing preventing me from starting it. With 161 episodes, 3 movies, and 12 OVAs I have been putting off that commitment for a while. To my surprise when I logged on to Netflix there was the first episode of a new remake. I put it on right away and I’m already excited for episode 2 to be released.

This isn’t the first anime to get a remake from Netflix. It is honestly a smart strategy to take well-written and loved anime and update the style for the next generation. I know they are currently working on One Piece, which will be an updated version of One Piece without any filler episodes.

To my knowledge, MAPPA is doing most of these reanimated anime. They are one of the best animation production companies, So I am always thrilled when I see they are working on an anime.

I hope that they don’t change the stories too much. I love that you can update the animation and give characters new voice actors but the classic stories we love need to remain the same. Just like how they were able to make more of Hunter X Hunter years after the original was released.

Ranma 1/2

Storyline: Ranma, raised to be a man among men, has a bit of a problem: he is half-woman! While training in China he fell into a strange magic spring at Jusenkyo. Now, he is eternally cursed to change into a beautiful woman whenever he is hit by cold water, but that may be the least of his problems; his father has betrothed him to marry! There’s never a dull day for Ranma as he attempts to find a cure for his curse, train to become stronger, and grapple with the fact that half of himself may be more feminine than his fiancée!

Info: 12 episodes

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Action, Shonen

Rated: TV-MA

Going into this first episode I had no expectations and no nostalgic feelings. With that in mind, I enjoyed episode 1. From what I have read it followed very closely to the original, which makes me excited to keep watching. With all of the horror anime I have been watching recently, it was a very nice change of pace. This story gives me Fruits Basket vibes with the awkward changing bodies because of a certain touch situation and I am all here for it.

Now that I am finally able to watch through longer anime I am tempted to start watching the original to compare the two. Even though it is an updated animation style I love how they didn’t change too much in the characters. It’s brighter with softer lines, unlike the 80s style with darker colors and bold black lines. After seeing picture comparisons of the original and remake, I feel as if the animators did an amazing job.

Ratings:

IMDb:7.9/10

Anime-Planet: 4/5

My thoughts: This looks like a fun and quirky show. Other than the changing genders concept I went into this first episode blind. I can see why so many people are fond of the original version and already know I am going got get a lot of laughs.

What are your thoughts on Ramna 1/2? Did you watch the original?

My Ultimate Studio Ghibli Film List: Ranking from Best to Worst

I debated on making this ranking. All of the Studio Ghibli films are unique works of art which makes it hard to rank. With 20+ movies released from 1985–2024, different genres, and out-of-this-world stories it makes it impossible not to enjoy at least one Studio Ghibli Film.

This is going to be a long list and I won’t be breaking it into parts, so to keep it brief I will just be ranking the movies from my favorite to least favorite and a few thoughts on the film.
