5 Characters Who Could Appear In 'Marvel Zombies' Season 2

Help could come!

Marvel Zombies, a spin-off from the season one What If..? episode 'What If.. Zombies?!', has proved a hit with audiences. Set in a branch universe where a Quantum virus has transformed most of the Earth's population into zombies, Kamala Khan a small group of survivors battle to deliver a potentially Earth-saving device into outer space, while a Zombie-fied Wanda Maximoff, aka The Dead Queen, works to thwart their efforts.

The series' cliffhanger ending, which appears to depict The Dead Queen trapping Kamala in the illusion of a utopian restored world while Riri Williams desperately tries to warn her of the Zombie Apocalypse still raging around her, has left fans eagerly clamoring for a second season. The problem? Most of the cast are dead or look as though they are about to be killed as we closed out the finale.

So, who could emerge to aid the survivors in a possible season two? Let's take a look.

1. Makkari

Attempting to take a shortcut in episode one, Kamala, Riri, and Kate end up in the middle of an endlessly raging battle between an infected Captain Marvel and Ikaris, one of the Eternals. While heavily damaged as a result of the battle, Ikaris, as a non-organic being, cannot be infected. This would assumably be true of all the Eternals.

Of that group, Makkari would be particularly useful in a Zombie Apocalypse scenario. Her super-speed coupled with her inability to be infected means Makkari could mow through hordes of zombies, clearing paths for the survivors at no risk to herself. In the Eternals film, Makkari apparently spends long periods of time holed up in the Eternals' ship, and given their functional immortality, 'Long periods of time' could be decades or more. This means Makkari is also a character who could potentially emerge having no idea the outbreak has occurred.

2. Joaquin Torres

First introduced in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series, Joaquin Torres is a young U.S Airforce Captain who befriends Sam Wilson during the series. Just prior to accepting his future as the next Captain America, Sam gifts Joaquin his broken original Falcon wings to repair, and he is active as the second Falcon by the time of Captain America: Brave New World.

Obviously, none of these events had a chance to occur in the timeline of Marvel Zombies. However, it's not outside the realm of possibility that some Military/Air Force bases managed to insulate against the worst of the crisis, and if Joaquin one of these, he could still be alive. He'd also mesh well with Kamala's 'Hope against the Odds' vibe.

3. Bucky Barnes

James Buchanan Barnes, better known as Bucky, has had a tough road in the main MCU 616 timeline. Believed killed in action and brainwashed into becoming Hydra assassin the Winter Soldier, Bucky eventually recovers, and was last seen becoming a founding member of the New Avengers.

Bucky is among the group of survivors in the original 'What If.. Zombies?!' episode, and is responsible for the zombie-fied Captain America becoming sliced in half as depicted in Marvel Zombies. Rewatching 'What If.. Zombies?!' in preparation for the new series, many fans noted that Bucky does not actually die during the episode, and is instead simply hurled far away from the site of the battle by Zombie Wanda. The Marvel Cinematic Universe wiki also lists this variant of Bucky as alive. This is far from confirmation given the open editing allowed on wikis, but he could potentially have lived to fight another day.

4. Agatha Harkness

In the Marvel Zombies timeline, the events of WandaVision never had a chance to occur. This means that this world's variant of the centuries-old witch Agatha Harkness never lost her powers, and is still in possession of the Darkhold.

Agatha's abilities could prove an asset to Kamala and any other survivors, as she and the Darkhold is probably the best possible counter to the Dead Queen. The only issue, of course, is if she can actually be trusted to help.

5. Rio Vidal/Death

In the latter half of Agatha All Along, the Green Witch Rio Vidal is revealed to be the MCU's personification of Death. Death aims to reclaim the soul of Billy Maximoff, as his possession of William Kaplan's body cheats death and upsets the natural order of things.

Zombies, as 'Living Dead', could also be seen as upsetting the Life-Death balance. If this situation goes on too long, Rio/Death could find eventually be driven to ally herself with the remaining Living in the hope of restoring the true natural order.

Let's hope confirmation on a second season of Marvel Zombies comes sooner rather than later.
