The day of the Event outer space was ripped open to create a gaping hellmouth, an open gate to the Abyss from which creatures of pure evil flew. Millions of foul things, living embodiments of Madness, Cruelty, Hate, and Corruption, flooded out of this hole in space to be vomited out across the world.

They shattered the Moon, tearing it into chunks, sending them flying in every direction. They slew millions, devouring people around the world. They possessed world leaders and started wars, launching nuclear attacks and unleashing chemical and biological weapons. It was Hell set loose on Earth, an Apocalypse undreamt of by mortal men and women.

Then there was the Magic. Waves of arcane power changed reality, a deluge of raw mana made nightmares come true, transmuted people and animals and even trees into twisted monsters that ravaged the land. Storms appeared that rained blood and hurled balls of fire. Mountains sprouted legs and walked across the land, crushing cities. Seas came to life and reared up like vast, liquid serpents to strike at the land, miles long tentacles of water unleashing floods that soon covered entire nations. In time a few people would learn to manipulate this power, but when it arrived modern, cynical people unused to believing in anything were helpless to deal with it.

The Shadowlings were first and soon the most common form of what people could only describe as demons, hundreds of thousands of them streaking out of the great wound in the universe that was bleeding magic and evil into the world. Bloated, bat-like, with sharp fangs, so dark their features could not be made out, blacker than the night itself except for their gleaming fangs and glowing eyes, they swooped down from the sky like shadows to devour their victims until their hunger was sated, tearing open throats to lap up blood and ripping open bodies to feast on hearts. But it was only when they were done eating that their real danger was discovered, as they quickly began entering the souls of people and possessing victims, turning men, women, even children into murderous fiends. Pouring themselves into victims like an inky stain in pure water, they took over bodies to commit vile deeds. Possessing the most innocent people, children, priests, and the aged, allowed them to surprise their victims and use these people as human shields. Other times they hid in an object, like a child's toy or kitchen appliance, and simply waited for a victim. People prayed and wept while science tried to expel the possessing spirits from Hell, but in the end it was only nuclear fire that halted the progress of these fiends, as dozens of cities like Beijing, New York, and Paris were destroyed in desperation. Still, thousands of the cunning fiends remain to wander the land…

These are shadowy demons with thick claws, ears like a bat, and leathery wings. Their flesh is so dark it appears to absorb all light that touches it, making them look like holes in space. Only their fangs, claws, and glowing eyes are visible. Hundreds of thousands of the foul monsters streaked out of Hell during the Event to plague the world.
