“Our party was hunting in the swamp, chasing a great green elk. The beast had enough meat on it to feed our family for a week or more, and we could sell its verdant pelt for a good bag of jink, but it was a fierce creature with sharp antlers spreading out 3 metres wide and eyes that glowed green. We chased it into a bog and it dived under the water to hide. We had spears and an Ancient weapon that shot bolts of fire, but we knew it could easily sneak up on us under the murky waters of the bog. The whole party spread out and waded forward carefully, aiming toward the spot we saw it dive.

The great elk leapt out of the water, charging at the centre of our line. It ran forward at our gunner, my cousin Zemel, and he took aim at it. But then, something else came out of the water! A huge wormlike thing opened its maw as it rose up under the lumbering elk, lifting it into the air. The elk bellowed in pain as a cloud of toxic vapour surrounded it, exhaled by the monstrous worm, dissolving its flesh. The vast maw opened wider to gulp down the whole elk. Enormous, translucent wings like those on a dragonfly spread out from its wiggling body and it flew into the sky, its two heads on sinuous necks shrieking as it streaked upwards. Zemel fired at it, sending a bolt of crimson heat at its bloated, slimy body. Its fleshed sizzled and it turned toward Zemel, enraged. A long, black tongue like a rope snaked out of its mouth, shot out, and wrapped around Zemel’s waist, yanking him into its three-jawed mouth. The rest of us hurled spears at it only to see them bounce off harmlessly. Its second head exhaled a cloud of sticky, corrosive venom at the hunting party. Brothers and cousins to my right and left died screaming, their flesh seeming to melt as they clawed at their faces. I dove into a pool of muck to avoid the spray of poison, and held my breath as long as I could before daring to peek out of the mud and take a breath. I looked up and saw the distant tail and wings of the monster streaking away far to the East. All around me lay crimson slaughter. I salvaged what I could of our gear and weapons, buried what was left of my kin in a mound and marked the grave with a stone, then marched tearfully back to the village…” — Old Man Leebe, former guardsman for the town of Aizendorf.

The Death Wyrm

A massive wormlike creature nearly a hundred feet long, covered in grey, slimy, chitinous plates. It has massive wings like a dragonfly and two heads on long, sinuous necks. This horrible monster dwells in swamps and greedily hoards anything of value it can find. It often forces nearby towns to pay it tribute in gold and human sacrifices.

The wyrm’s lair in a grotto under a bog has its hoard of 1400 gold pieces worth of coins and gems that it sleeps on and 1d4 items from the 80-100 range on its treasure table.

AC: 18, HP: 64, ATK: 2 bite +9 (2d12 + swallow) or 2 poison breath, MV: double near (burrow/fly) S: +5, D: +3, C: +3, I: +3, W: +3, Ch: +3, AL: C, LV: 14
