Where do the doubles come from and who is engaged in their extermination

In 1955, a small town was invaded by monsters with the supernatural ability to transform into any person. These creatures, known as doubles or shapeshifters, are especially dangerous due to their ability to hide among people and strike from behind. The main goal of these monsters is to destroy all life and subjugate the planet.

To prevent a catastrophe, a special department was created to detect doubles - the Department of Double Unmasking (DDD). The main task of this unit is to search for, identify, track and eliminate doubles. An important role in this process is played by guards who control checkpoints in residential buildings and try to identify potential doubles among neighbors.

Dangerous and thankless job of a guard

The main character, a guard, will sit in his office and watch through the window at those who are trying to get inside. His office has everything he needs to interact with his neighbors, check their documents, and create a safe environment.

  • First, there is a phone in the office that can be used to call the DDD service in case of danger. The service number is indicated on a piece of paper attached to the wall to the left of the window. Below is a list of neighbors who have applied to leave the building today. They must return home, and the guard will have to check them to decide whether to let them back in.
  • Second, on the same wall where the piece of paper with the DDD phone number hangs, there is a red button. When you press it, all the windows and doors are automatically closed with iron shutters, preventing monsters from entering the office or escaping outside. The button will be useful if a dangerous creature appears outside the window: the guard will be able to call DDD agents and wait for them in complete safety.
  • Third, on the opposite wall from the window there are folders with documentation. All information is sorted by floors and apartments, which makes it easier to find the necessary data. By opening the necessary folder, the guard can see basic information about each neighbor, including their photo, biography, apartment number and phone number, as well as their characteristics and unique features. A detailed description is required to conduct a thorough check and identify doubles.

Ability and the main danger of doubles

The doppelgangers in thats not my neighbor game have the ability to transform into anyone. There are 20 people living in the house, each of whom could theoretically be a shifter monster.

It is sometimes extremely difficult to identify a double. They masterfully disguise themselves, and it becomes almost impossible to distinguish a copy from the original. Some doubles reveal their true nature only during a conversation with the guard, when he begins to ask leading questions. For example, you can ask if the neighbor knows his identification number. If he cannot name it, this should alert you. In addition, the monster can be identified if it does not take into account some details during transformation. These include a mole on the cheek, the absence of a hat, a tired or angry look, an incomprehensible black liquid near the eyes, and others. There are also doubles that do not try to hide at all. They are easy to spot: they have no face, they may have extra pairs of limbs or eyes. It is enough to compare the appearance of a neighbor with his photo in his personal file to understand who he really is. Clothes also require additional and thorough checking. Even if everything else is perfectly copied, there may be blood stains on the clothes. This happens if the double recently fed on human flesh. Despite all the horror of the situation, this will help prevent further tragedies and not let the monster into the house.

The process of identifying doubles is significantly more complicated in the "nightmare" mode. Here, all the neighbors have an inhuman appearance. All of them are real monsters. They have melted faces, sharp teeth, dozens of eyes and frightening grins. But this does not mean that they are doubles. To identify them, you also need to compare documentation, photographs, etc., but the process itself becomes much more difficult.
