Tarkov’s Discovery Period is the Best Part
(Intro) Tarkov might have one of the best discovery periods of any game in this genre. It’s a magical time that allows people who are new and trying to figure out the game, to feel as though their time investment has some tangible results. Sure, EFT is a weird, complex and obtuse game in many different areas. Menuing being so taxing and cumbersome, little quirks and oddities with many mechanics interacting with each other, but at its core, EFT is a well that feels bottomless when you first start playing. Or even for veterans, with each new wipe and major patch, it’s a time everyone celebrates and gets to rediscover the old as well as the new and what makes EFT such an addictive game when it’s firing on all cylinders. There are some other games in different genres that also scratch this itch, but we’ll make those comparisons once we establish and understand what EFT gets right in regard to overall discovery of the game and its mechanics. Today, we’ll be going over why Tarkov is at its best when people are learning, and when it has something new and fresh to offer the player base. Because with the exception of one other series of games, nothing even comes close.

The cave had been considered cursed for centuries, but no one left alive remembered why. It was a place of ill-omen, where no rest was to be had by the wounded and weary. Legends spoke of demons and clouds of poison and gods of death dwelling in the black depths of the cave. At the deepest part of the cave was the Great Seal, a slab of obsidian covered in runes and a thirty foot wide magic circle. People dumped trash and corpses in the cave, and sometimes bandits or tribes of humanoids would hide here, but never for very long. Stingbats roosted on the ceiling next to giant arachnids that looked like stalactites. Giant rats and centipedes creeped around the dark corners of the cave in search of food. Other malignant creatures stirred in the shadows, lurking, waiting for prey.

The Impact of Tarkov’s Most Controversial Addition
(Intro) Tarkov has had a large variety of additions to the game that depending on who you asked, were either good for the game, or controversial at best. EFT is an immersive extraction shooter and from the get-go, it always wanted to lean into the difficulty and the grittiness that comes from being in the middle of a fictional war-torn city. But sometimes, they perhaps leaned into this a little too much; and that was reflected in both major and minor additions to the game that ultimately changed how the community both played and talked about it as a whole. Whether it was mechanical, weapons, balance, and anything else in between there have been moments where the community collectively looked at what was being added and was worried it might negatively impact the game, so much that it would ruin the game and drive players away.
