Did Tarkov Create the Extraction Genre by Accident?
(Intro) Is Escape From Tarkov the first extraction shooter, and if so, did that technically happen by accident? With the rise of the extraction genre, more developers wanting to try their hand at making something unique and interesting, it’s always good when you are in this position to look at the success and see what makes them so revered by those who experienced it. And in this case of this genre, it’s no surprise that EFT took the world by storm and fulfilled a desire for many players out there; a rugged, tough as nails game that doesn’t explain anything to you for better or worse, but has easily one of the most addictive thirty-second loops of any multiplayer game currently out there. Once a new player starts to understand the game and figures out some of the beginner mechanics, the itch to play kicks in and that’s how Tarkov pulls you over to the other side. And with the success of EFT over the years, and it finally finding its stride, when you look back at the history of popular multiplayer games, this genre is absent for the most part. Because before the popularity of extraction games became a thing, the more previous trend for a while was battle royale games. Last man standing, random loot on a map that can be played a thousand and one ways (if designed well), and a gameplay loop that has no barrier of entry with no real loss when you lose. EFT is for the most part, the opposite of that; nothing but stakes every time you load in, no guarantee you’ll win or even survive and everyone trying to fight each other. It’s kind of surprising that that it’s become as popular as it currently is. This topic is being talked about a lot right now; not just the first game but what makes them so effective. So, I wanted to chime in and give my own perspective on the matter. Upon looking back at gaming trends, a question arose; was EFT the very first proper extraction shooter? Or was there something else before it?

What Works and Doesn’t Work with Woods in Tarkov
(Intro) Woods has been in EFT for as long as Customs has. It’s a much different flavor when compared to most other maps in the game and provides a much different experience when played on. Most people who have been playing the game for years now, I would take a guess and say they enjoy Woods for a few different reasons. And it wasn’t until December of 2020, that Woods saw a major expansion to the map that provided areas that can get you lost if you don’t know where you’re going. Alongside that, it also has Shturman as the scav boss, as well as the Goons which can rotate around to Woods. For most though, when you think of Woods as a map, and the playstyle that is most appropriate for that map, the most obvious answer is sniping. It's been a quintessential part of Woods’ identity; taking a big rifle with a huge scope on it and seeing what kind of shenanigans you can get into. However, as time has gone on, my own personal enjoyment of the map has somewhat wavered, and I never could pinpoint exactly why. Today, I wanted to discuss Woods as a map, go over the original design, the expansion, what makes it fun, what frustrates people and ask the question: do people still enjoy playing Woods after all these years?

(Intro) We’ve all wondered this question: what will escaping from Tarkov actually look like as a game mechanic? With the knowledge that BSG wants this game to reach 1.0 by the end of the year, it makes sense that these kinds of question begin to pop up. All we know currently is that we don’t have any of the critical quests we will need to complete to beat the game, and that Terminal is going to be our golden ticket out of here. But there are still so many questions left unanswered: What is the new story progression going to look like? What will we need to do to reach the end game? How much of the game will we go through before the option to leave becomes available? A lot of unique and interesting questions that we never really had to think about. Everyone kind of hand-waved the idea of reaching 1.0 off, as the years went on because it just felt like BSG was never going to get there. But they are determined to see it through by the end of 2025 and I hope they can deliver on that timeline. In the meantime, I think asking, answering and coming up with some hypothesis about what Tarkov will look like with all the main quests integrated is interesting and compelling. So, let’s do just that; what will the players in EFT do in order to beat the game, and finally escape from Tarkov?
