I remember the first time played Street Fighter II at the arcade. I briefly glanced over the pictures of fighters, excited to see that there was a woman available to select. I loved being able to fight as someone I could relate to, and I always picked her. Chun Li wasn’t weak; she was equal to the men she fought against. She had special moves designed for her, including her powerful kick. I felt that she could do anything the men in the game could do, and I was right. She’s gone on to be more iconic than any of the men in the game, with her being featured and referenced in other media.

To role-play or not to role-play: that is the question
Role playing is a widespread practise among the world of gaming (and not only within the video games industry), whose goal is to enhance and improve the bond between the player and the character who is being impersonated. Table top RPG games appeared for the first time on the market in 1974 with Dungeons & Dragons and have become quite popular nowadays, with examples such as the above mentioned D&D, World of Darkness, 7th Sea or Star Trek Adventures, to start with. When the whole concept of gaming went through its digital evolution, we can all imagine the possibilities that this implied: the chance to actually see a character and the world around it did nothing more than amplify the whole connection between player/playable character. With the never ending evolution of video gaming and the whole innovation of the story telling in games narrated through the eyes of a character (both in first person and third), this kind of connection grew stronger and stronger, and the chances to play games that allow the player to actually choose the actions of a character are several. Games such as Detroit: Become Human, Until Dawn, The Witcher Saga, Cyberpunk 2077 or The Elder Scrolls Series give the player the freedom to determine the actions they take (some more than others), actions that in most cases have a strong impact on the story itself.

A Game Collector's Haven
The year was probably 2001 or 2002. My video game collecting itch was very strong at that point. I don't think a lot of people were really into game collecting as they are today. So this whole story will make sense if you realize the time that this happened. I mean I think Lord of the Rings had just come out and maybe even Harry Potter. The internet was just burgeoning. I don't even think MySpace was around back then. I think I had an Asian Avenue account or GeoCities at the time.

Ever since I was a child, I have been obsessed with video games. It didn’t matter what the genre was; I played a little bit of everything. RPGs, Racing games, horror survival, 2D platforms, you name it, I was dabbling with it at one point or another. The first video game console my siblings and I were introduced to was the NES or Nintendo Entertainment System released on July 15th, 1983. My eldest brother actually had an Atari 2600 before coming into money to buy his first gaming system, which was the NES. By the time he purchased a Turbo Graffix 16, he had donated the previous console to us in the middle 90s.
