A “magical portal” just like in a sci-fi movie is an idea of Lithuania and Poland, aiming to connect people of these two cities 600km apart .

The cities of Vilnius in Lithuania and Lublin in Poland are now connected by a technological portal, where they can see each other. The project is called PORTAL , and its purpose is to shorten the distance between people, with the message of making people forget the divisions between us and celebrate the unity of this planet. Not only does the project have a great meaning, but it also makes for a cool and futuristic looking symbol.

The gate represents space and time.

The circular gate symbolizes the wheel of time , and in science fiction, it symbolizes space and time. This virtual “bridge” between the Lithuanian capital Vilnius and one of Poland’s oldest cities, Lublin, is the first of its kind. In Vilnius, the magical gate can be found next to the Vilnius train station. Meanwhile, in Lublin, it is located on Plac Litewski.

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected people's need to meet. Face-to-face conversations and exchanges cannot take place as usual. The "Gate" was born to help people in two distant places meet and interact with each other.

The "gateway" located in Lithuania allows users to communicate with the other "gateway", located in Poland.

The circle, which connects to a screen that looks like a portal to another dimension, actually allows you to see people in other cities and wave to them. Both “portals” have screens and cameras that stream live from other cities. The view you see on the screen is designed to resemble what astronauts see when they look out at the world below. The piece encourages people to “rethink the meaning of unity,” Go Vilnius said in a press release.

The circular design, intended to evoke the wheel of time and “a famous sci-fi icon ,” was designed by engineers at the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University’s Center for Creativity and Innovation – also known as Vilnius Tech.

The circle connected to the screen looks like a portal to another space.

The project was developed over five years by engineers at the LinkMenų fabrikas center, part of the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Lithuania). Benediktas Gylys, President of the Benediktas Gylys Foundation, is the one who proposed the idea that "gates" create bridges of communication for people .

According to Gylys, limited perceptions of people and the world are the cause of the challenges humanity faces, including social discord and climate change.

“That’s why we bring the ‘gate’ into life. It’s a bridge of unity, encouraging people to overcome prejudice and differences that are a thing of the past ,” Gylys said.

Explaining the circular shape of the “gate,” the team said it was a “well-known, well-received science fiction symbol.” According to Gizmodo, the team may be referring to the Stargate from the series of the same name, which allows for quick travel between planets.

The idea of connecting people in different areas is considered highly practical.

The portal currently has no audio because it is technically difficult to have audio 24/7, however, it is possible and will be implemented for special events. However, the creators of the project believe that people will find ways to communicate without being able to hear the other side. They have noticed that people wave, kiss or make various other gestures to communicate.

As people understand each other better, the "gate" development team hopes to help society develop sustainably.

The development team said it plans to install similar "gates" in other European cities, including Reykjavik (Iceland) and London (UK).
