Democracy Was On the Ballot—And Democracy Won
“Democracy is a system in which parties lose elections.” These are concise words of wisdom from one of my favorite political scientists, Adam Przeworski, in his 1991 book, Democracy and the Market. Przeworski’s definition of democracy has been criticized by many as too minimalist, because he focuses on elections (contestation) much more than civil and political rights (who can participate, and how). But for Przeworski, his main focus was the idea that each electoral cycle produces winners and losers, and he defined a stable democracy as the willingness of the losers to accept the present defeat in the knowledge that they may win again in the future. This “long time horizon” is made possible by stable democratic institutions (the rules of the game!) that allow conflicting interests to lose one election and then compete (and possibly win) the next time around. For Przeworski, this long-term agreement between competing parties is the core essence of democracy (and beautifully exemplified by Vice President Al Gore’s 2000 concession speech).

They had the ‘ear’ of their Master and Mistress which gave them some influence with the Lord and Lady of the House. This was either a good thing or a bad thing with the other staff within the household. The valet answered only to his master but still worked closely with the butler.

1. A person's subconscious behavior shows that whether he loves you depends not on what he says, but on the details of his behavior. Many people will say a lot of sweet words. Once implemented, they will find that they are just like foam, drifting away with the wind. Only those subtle feelings can accurately detect his true feelings for you. These behaviors do not need to be so brilliant, nor do they need to give you expensive gifts. They are just some behaviors that sound a little unworthy of mention, and can best reflect love. Maybe he remembered that you didn't like to eat coriander. Every time he ate, he would remember to remind the boss not to put coriander. Maybe he was walking together on the road, and he always subconsciously let you walk inside. Maybe it was when you accidentally got your chopsticks to the ground during the meal.
