September is the month with one federal holiday: Labor Day.

In the Julian and Gregorian calendars, September is the ninth month of the year. It is one of four months with 30 days, the others being April, June, and November.
In 2025, September starts on the first Monday and ends on the last Tuesday. The ninth month doesn't end on the same day as any other month in the year, making it unique.
September is the month when most students return to school and some employees return to work after summer vacations.

Holidays in September
September has one official holiday. It is Labor Day, which is the first Monday of the month, no matter what date it falls on. In 2025, Labor Day is celebrated on Monday, September 1.
Children in the South used to return to school the day after Labor Day, since it indicated the end of their summer vacation. Still, there are some hot days left in the year. Students wear shorts to schools that allow them as part of their dress code.
In 2025, many schools in the United States opened before Labor Day. Some returned to school as early as July 24. Some schools had already been in session for a few weeks before Labor Day.

- Aster: There are about 180 species of aster. The name comes from an Ancient Greek word meaning "star" based on the shape of the flower head. Many species and varieties are popular as garden plants because they are attractive and colorful. Asters are symbols of powerful love, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.

September's birthstone is the sapphire, which symbolizes clear thinking. Sapphires and rubies are two color varieties of the same mineral.
