In the year 1854, a grand maritime tale unfolded, centered around the magnificent SS Arctic, a passenger liner heralded as the swiftest of its time. With great anticipation and a sense of adventure, the vessel embarked on a treacherous voyage across the vast Atlantic Ocean, sailing into the enigmatic embrace of the Misty Veil, where its fate would be forever altered.

Originating from humble beginnings, the Collins Line, an American shipping company founded in 1818, had gradually gained prominence in transatlantic trade by 1835. Their steam-powered ships revolutionized the crossing, completing the journey from Liverpool to New York in a mere ten days—a staggering feat considering the weeks it took other vessels of the era.

The wooden-hulled steamships, with their powerful engines, had become the preferred choice for distinguished individuals seeking a safe and expedient passage. However, in the depths of their success, echoes of a cautionary tale lingered—a reminder of another ill-fated vessel believed to be unsinkable. Yet, the Collins Line pressed on, fueled by ambition, determined to assert its dominance alongside its sole competitor, the Cunard Line.

Among the fleet of Collins ships, the majestic Arctic stood as a testament to engineering prowess. Stretching an impressive 284 feet in length, propelled by side lever steam engines generating a combined one thousand horsepower, and boasting paddle wheels that spun at a remarkable sixteen revolutions per minute, it was hailed as the most awe-inspiring vessel ever crafted in the United States.

On a fateful day in September, the Arctic commenced its journey from Liverpool to New York, cutting through the dense fog with unwavering determination. Perhaps a sense of overconfidence had settled upon the crew after four years of flawless voyages. Unbeknownst to them, danger lurked in the shadows of the mist.

Approximately fifty miles from Newfoundland, disaster struck as the Arctic collided with the smaller SS Vesta, a fishing vessel navigating the same treacherous path. Startled by the impact, the Arctic's captain extended a helping hand, unaware of the grave damage inflicted upon his own vessel.

Beneath the waterline, a breach had torn open the Arctic's hull, allowing icy seawater to infiltrate its inner chambers. The once-revered wooden construction proved feeble against the relentless onslaught, as efforts to seal the breach proved futile. Slowly but surely, the sea's relentless embrace filled the ship, extinguishing its mighty boilers and robbing it of its legendary power.

Desperately, the crew steered toward land, fighting a losing battle against the rising waters. Eventually, the Arctic succumbed to its watery grave, leaving behind a scene of chaos and heartache. The maritime laws of the time allowed for only six lifeboats, capable of saving a mere 180 souls—insufficient for the ship's crew and passengers, which numbered in the hundreds.

Amidst the pandemonium, the principles of chivalry crumbled, as survival instinct took hold. Men, women, and children fought for limited space in the lifeboats, disregarding societal niceties. Four harrowing hours elapsed before the Arctic disappeared beneath the waves, taking with it the lives of 150 crew members and 250 passengers.

In the aftermath, only three lifeboats reached the safety of the shore, while the fate of the other three remained a haunting mystery. Astonishingly, a rescue party discovered survivors clinging desperately to wreckage two days later, their will to survive defying all odds.

The tragic news reverberated throughout the land, filling hearts with profound sadness and igniting fiery anger toward the negligent safety measures aboard the Arctic. Public outcry demanded a change in maritime regulations, advocating for an adequate number of lifeboats to safeguard every individual
