The Witch of the Broken Computer
Shifty was a pink woollen rabbit whose creator crocheted him under dubious artistic inspiration. He was intended to be cute, but his limbs turned out too short, and his wiry blue whiskers conveyed no capacity for fun. His ears twisted this way and that like a long joke with a disappointing punchline. His beady eyes gave him a cold, sociopathic stare, like he had no soul.

He covered his eyes with his arm, and heard the door peek open. “Honey, some nice men looking for Elijah want to talk to you,” his mother said. “They found something of his, and want to ask you some questions. I can tell them to come another time if you don’t feel like it.”

A Kindness
Jingle, jingle! I awoke with a start. I opened my eyes to see my room as it had always been: books on shelves, models of aeronautics hanging from the ceiling, art supplies and legos strewn about my desk and floor, clothes crumpled everywhere. Nothing amiss. I closed my eyes again.

The Enigma of Higham Hill
The snow fell relentlessly - winds were blowing at fierce speeds. Drifts piled high above my head and the biting cold stung my eyes. It was a wondrous thing to behold! Finally, silence. All was still. I felt completely peaceful. The noise of modern life had come to a halt - but only for a short while. I breathed deeply, and relaxed into that stillness. The only sound was the faint thump of my beating heart, the breath that escaped from my lungs and the crunch of snow beneath my feet. I walked in a bubble of down. The cold didn't touch me. Time evaporated and all thought quieted down to barely a whisper.
