The Dichotomy of the Gemini
I’m a Gemini. And I’ve always been fascinated by astrology. Does my star sign really reflect who I am? Who I’m likely to get on with? What jobs I’ll be good at? My boyfriend, Gary, is the typical sceptic: “Right, because there are only twelve different personalities in the world.” And, in some ways, I tend to agree with him. It does seem a little ridiculous when you put it like that and, in truth, although I read my horoscopes, I don’t set much store by them. I won’t change my day because of a prediction by Mystic Meg (although I do like to read horoscopes after the fact to see if anything they said did happen – but that’s a whole other article!).

Note: There will be numbers by some phrases or words. If you scroll to the last page and look at the little article corresponding with the number, it will add to the full experience of the story. I’m sorry for the format of this feature, but I know not enough about technology to put it at the bottom of the page containing the number.

Cards on the Table
Dark, Scorpionic energy roils and sizzles around us as we take our seats at the little Victorian table with its stylized harp pedestal. The room is dim and warm. A choir of candles kneels in crystal dishes scattered about us, their song the whisper of flame against blue shadows. I smile at you across the ebony polish of the table and tap the deck of cards that lies between us. I am knocking at a door.

The Cloud Couple
Part #1 — Present: June 1, 2021 — Somewhere in the moonlit skies outside LA Likely hundreds of cycles ago, the Great Kingdom was born. Cycles ago, my great-grandmother began ruling. She was 13. (That's how we work here.) Anyways, a fellowship of Elves fancied our kingdom. We merely told them no, so they did something Elves tend to do and declared war upon our people. The fighting persisted until my mother was 13 and able to rule. At that point, enough was enough, and so my mother set out to conclude the war. After completing some searching, my mother came across The Lord of the Skies. She'd heard about his tremendous legacies, and so she urged him to follow and conclude the war. He accepted but at a price. As the Lord wasn't exactly evil, he would only aid those who meant well, but he was also quite crooked and so was the price that he demanded. The Lord wanted my mother's first child if God wanted her to bear one. He wanted the child so that he could use his eyes, as he had none. My mother tearfully accepted, for the comfort of her Kingdom was more important than the happiness of herself. So, The Lord of the Skies progressed to conclude the war and cast out the disastrous Elves.

Tale of a Talent Trial
Hundreds of glowing fairies in every shade of the rainbow fluttered above the stage, creating vivid streaks of color as they flitted this way and that. The swarms coalesced into a cloud and as the swirling colors began to descend, began to take the shape of a minuscule purple and blue dragon.

The Power
The day had come. Nyah would finally become a magician. Or at least placed in one of the magical clans to train. She had waited for her key for weeks and had just been about to give up hope when one day the rusty, old key laid there on her doormat. The delay in the key’s arrival had caused her to have all kinds of emotions and she had started questioning herself. Could she be the black sheep of the family? The one without any magic in her soul? Relief had coursed through her when she saw the key followed by excitement and a little nausea. Attached to it had been a brown note stating only a time and a place but Nyah knew what it was. It was her invitation to the room with the hundred doors. The test that would place her in one of the nine magical clans.

The Little Black Book of Magic
David was thrilled. He had been to a yard sale in a small, sleepy town in Wiltshire. A big brown box had attracted his attention and his instinct for a treasure hunt was rising. He purchased the box contents unseen. The anticipation of what was in the box was giving him a good feeling as he drove home.
