Zayera's Plight

Bringing the new age

By Colt HendersonPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

There weren't always dragons in the Valley. The elders tell stories about how the last dragons were hunted to extinction by the Fire-Walkers before they were even born. Fire-Walkers learned how to control flames and used them to overthrow the Dragon Lords dynasty. The final Lords flew to Mount Vashery, but the Fire-Walkers found them. It is said to have been a fight for the ages. Both sides throwing different colored flames lit up the sky in colors never seen before, or since. When the last Dragon Lord died the Fire-Walkers laid claim to all lands originally owned by the Lords. Everything was fine at first, the elders say, but soon the Fire-Walkers became tyrannical, just like the Dragon Lords. Many people tried to fight back, but the masses were outmatched. Many lives were lost that day. The people still remember that day in a somber celebration known as Angel's Day. Now the people live under the thumb of the Fire-Walkers.

All rules now come from the Priest of Fire. He rules with an iron fist and uses his close circle of men and women to enforce his laws. They are known as the Circle and they are famous for being cruel. They take pride in hurting the ones deemed unbelievers. If you disobeyed any law you were called an unbeliever. You were either punished with a Hot Hand or you were sent to a work camp. The Circle is just the tip of the Priest of Fire's spear. Next is the Flame. This is pretty much the army of the Fire-Walkers. They have been slowly taking land to the south. The Uny, the people to the south, have sent delegates several times, but they never return. The neighbors to the east, the Lornans, and the ones to the west, the Remians, have been growing their armies in the event of an invasion. They have the numbers, but they lack the power to overthrow the Priest of Fire.

The rest of the world despise the Fire-Walkers, but the only ones that could have beat them were the Dragon Lords. They, of course, are all gone. Now the world holds its breath as the Priest of Fire slowly takes control of more and more lands. His eyes set on the world.

Zayera, born in the 5th age of Fire, has grown up learning to control the flames. She is on the fast track to become a leader in the Flame, and possibly the first Priestess of Fire. She is only 13, but has already graduated to the advanced techniques class. Her power already rivals that of her teachers and is still growing. Her flames are blue instead of the ordinary reddish orange, like her fellow students and teachers.

Unlike her friends and family she believes in reforming the Fire-Walkers. She was taught that they were spreading freedom, but she had seen the ruthlessness of the Circle. She knew the news of prosperity in the newly acquired lands were nothing but propaganda and wanted that to change.

Zayera, when she wasn't practicing her fire, loved to go hiking in the woods behind her house. She recently found a cave which she decided to explore. The day she went spelunking her life changed forever. Deep inside the cave she found an enormous egg. It was almost as big as her at nearly 4 feet tall.

Zayera decided to not tell anyone about the egg. They would want to destroy it. Or they would send it to the Priest of Fire and he would become even more powerful. Instead she would try and hatch the blue swirled egg.
