When Dreams Become Reality

A magical story about dreams becoming reality.

Gwenyth's Moon Necklace.

I was floating, floating on a cloud. It felt like a dream. Was it a dream? I didn’t care, I never wanted to leave. As I floated through the sky I saw beautiful things. I saw the birds flying right next to me, I saw the warm sun and felt its warmth on my face, I saw the bright blueness of the sky surrounding me in all its glory. It was breathtaking. Suddenly, as I lay on the cloud it started to feel less comfortable, and like it was vanishing beneath me. It was. Before I could even think, I was falling.

I woke with a gasp. “Ugh, I hate when that happens,” I complained. I mean why would anyone want to feel like they’re falling to their death in their sleep? I wished I could go back to sleep but I couldn’t. I’d have to wait until tonight to finish the wonderful dream.“Ashlyn!” my mother yelled. I stretched and hopped out of bed. “Yes, mom?” I yelled back. “Come here!” she had a tone of excitement in her voice. I walked downstairs and saw her sitting at the island in the kitchen.“You’ll never guess what I found!” she squealed. “What?” I asked wiping my eyes. “Look.” She set the surprise on the granite countertop. “No way!” I exclaimed. “Where did you find it?!” It was a necklace replica from my favorite book, ‘Gwenyth’s World’. It was about a girl, Gwenyth, who had a magic necklace that was passed on by her grandmother. The necklace made every dream she had come true. It was fiction, of course. “Just at the thrift store down the road!” my mom explained. “Thank you so much!” I hugged my mom, grabbed the necklace, and ran upstairs to my room.

I examined the necklace. It was stunning, it had a silver chain, a beautiful, silver crescent moon, with a light blue stone to the right of it, it was inside of the moon like it was being protected. I always admired Gwenyth’s necklace, but I could never find a replica of it in stores or online. I put it on and walked over to my mirror. I looked at the necklace and tried to pretend it was the real one, that it actually worked. But that was insane. That kind of stuff just doesn’t exist. I spent the rest of the day reading ‘Gwenyth’s World’ and pretending I was Gwenyth. I read all her lines, acted out her expressions, and finished the whole 864 paged book in 5 hours, I know that seems really long, but I looked it up and it would take the average person 23.6 hours just to read 850 pages. “I am such a book nerd.” I laughed to myself. I plopped onto my bed, tired from reading so many words, and suddenly I was sleeping.

This time I didn’t see any clouds. I couldn’t even see the sky, it was covered by all the dense green trees surrounding me, but they weren’t scary, they were beautiful. I loved nature, and I always have. I was surrounded by trees and a dazzling stream running gracefully around me, I followed the stream in hopes to find the source. Eventually when I saw not a small stream, but a large pool of water around me, I stopped. It was the prettiest blue water, the kind you just want to jump right in because it looks so magical. I looked up and saw a mystic waterfall supplying the pond with its beautiful water. Before I even gave it a second thought, I dived in. The water was cold, but I didn’t mind. I was having the absolute best time of my life. I went to go swim under the waterfall to see if anything was hiding behind it. “I wonder,” I said to myself. I swam quickly over and everything went black.

“Are you alright?” I heard someone ask, panic in their voice. I was trying to answer but all I could do was cough. Eventually, my coughing ended and I was able to speak. “I think so,” I answered. Then I finally realized. “OH MY GOSH!” I screamed. “What?! Are you alright?!” She was panicked. “But- your-your Gwenyth!” I was totally freaking out. “You’re like, amazing.” I was totally embarrassed. I didn’t know what to say. How was I gonna say something when my favorite fictional character was standing right in front of me? “Thanks, but I just want to make sure you’re okay. I was walking in the forest and saw you swim right under the waterfall and not come up. There’s nothing but rock behind that, so I assumed you hit your head and jumped in to save you.” She explained. “I drowned?” I asked. “Well you were drowning I saved you.” She said smiling. As I looked at her I saw her long, wavy, blonde, now damp hair blowing in the wind. It also looked like she had her makeup messed up, running mascara and all. Her clothes were also soaked. “Dang it,” I complained. “What?” Gwenyth asked. I didn’t respond, after all, I didn’t need to. She wasn’t real. I slapped myself over, and over, and over. I was trying to wake up, but I couldn’t. “What are you doing?” She asked. “Waking myself up,” I explained. “But you are awake.” she laughed.

Of course she would say that, that’s how dreams work, they feel real. Suddenly, I was starting to feel the pain of my slaps. That shouldn’t happen, you can’t feel physical pain in dreams, can you? It felt real, too real. “Gwenyth?” I said. “Yes?” she replied. “Is this real, or am I dreaming? And prove it.” I demanded. “It’s real. Here, go and try to hold your breath under the water if you come up, its because you ran out of air, and that doesn’t happen in dreams.” She suggested. “Alright.” I agreed. I walked down to the water, put my face under, and started counting. “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven,” I thought. I was starting to feel the feeling of running out of air. I came up. I also realized I could feel the water completely. “This can’t be-” I started. “Real?” I heard Gwenyth ask. I didn’t even know she approached me. “It’s my necklace. You stole it.” She looked angry now. I looked down and saw the necklace against my chest. Except, something was different, the blue stone was glowing just like it did when Gwenyth’s dreams, were becoming reality. “No,” I said in disbelief. “M-my mom just got this from the thrift store. It’s a replica.” I explained. “And replicas just glow without batteries?” She asked. I felt so many emotions at once. Four things I knew, I wasn’t dreaming, this necklace was not a replica, my favorite fictional character wasn’t very fictional anymore, and my adventure was just beginning.
