Introduction

This is prompt number 22 from the Vocal Guide

What?

"I had never seen anything like it before..."

Awoken by the noise outside, I looked through the window at what appeared to be a black column coming down from the sky into our town centre.

It was weird, and I got dressed to go and look closer.

As I got closer it seemed to be like the scenery and been wiped rather than being an actual physical thing. Others were there as well but apparently, the police and military had been called.

When we looked up the night seemed to be on fire, sparking like a Van der Graaf Generator, and the sparks were being sucked into the column of nothing. A flock of birds flew into it, they did not come out.

A purple fog swathed the town, and people were starting to cough, I had a COVID mask on and as yet I had not been affected, but I was worried but almost hypnotized by the nothing of the column.

We could not see the top, although the dimensions were constant and it seemed to go on forever.

A man saw his dog run into the column, he went to try and save it but they were both gone.

Already there were some religious fanatics proclaiming it as the door to heaven, that rapture was here and they too were gone. Others said it was the door to hell and that bad people should be thrown in.

The military came and cordoned off the column, but they could not say what it was apart from a spatial sinkhole. It was just something that things went into and didn't come out.

Attempts to measure it returned nothing and anything physical that went into it did not come back. A robot unit went it to send back pictures and data, but nothing came back. No one knew whether the unit was destroyed or the signal could not be sent.

As day broke, the column of nothing was still there, like some huge columnar stake, except with no physical form. The observers said that it went down into the earth and reports were coming that had emerged in Australia, twisting its way through the Earth.

There were concerns that it would cause earthquakes and even split the planet, but it seemed to have no detrimental effect on the Earth, it was just a column of nothing that swallowed up anything that entered it.

Questions were asked about where it had come from. Was it an alien attack? But again it was having no detrimental effect unless something went into it.

Ten years later it was still there. Nothing had happened and no one knew anything more about it.

It was a permanent, everlasting mystery, but people still were trying to find its origins, but as yet, it was not giving up its secrets.
