Introduction

This is for L.C. Schäfer's August Challenge that you can find out about here

The music is "Song To The Siren" by Garbage

We're Not Going To Make It

The order had come in and it was not the sort of thing that we would normally take on. The client had offered us a hell of a lot of money to do this but we both were not sure that we could do this and/or we wanted to.

If you were to ask, we would say that we were producers of industrial art with a side order of mechanical maintenance to keep the wolf from the door and pay the bills. We feared debt collectors and bailiffs a lot more than lupine threats.

Money talked, and sometimes it got very loud, and this client's money was screaming at us, but what he wanted was both difficult and, in our opinions, wrong.

Though doing this would mean that we would not have to work for a few years if we so chose. That was very tempting, it really was. We were backing away from this because we got the feeling that if we did it once there would be more to come, and we didn't even want to do it once.

He wanted to know our decision by three o'clock, and if he heard nothing by then he would take his commission elsewhere.

So what were we to do?

Should we put aside our morals and qualms and go ahead with this?

We didn't know whether this was even legal, and one of our considerations was that we might end up behind bars.

So we looked at each other and said to each other:

"We're Not Going To Make It, Are We?"

The commission was to encase what looked like a mermaid as a clear, solid resin cube. We did not know if the mermaid was real, or a dismembered woman stitched to a large fishtail. No sane person would take that on, no matter how much money was offered ........

Hey, she's already dead. Maybe someone will recognize her enshrined corpse and turn in her murderers!

What a great story. Till the part about the mermaid this could be all about life in general.
