Let’s see.

It shut down last night when Ol’ Gabe went home.

Startup begins on page 0583.

I hope the old man is ok, he seemed a little off when he left I guess.

Step One.

Step Two..

Step Three…

Step Nine….

Jesus Christ none of this is doing anything. Thing won’t even show a sign of power and none of the controls are responding. I think I’m going to sit down for a moment in the old man’s chair, I’ve been at it for an hour and Laurey has to be watching me by now.

Oh look.

Gabes Journal: VCK P6

S1: Flip breaker up, back of machine next to the coffee pot, start coffee pot first.

S2: If the machine doesn’t start the city power is low, have a mug and wait.

*Half a mug later.

S3: Theres a little lever on the end of the machine that controls the conveyor, turn that on, the safety broke years ago so we tied it into the e-stop system.

4: If the machine initially started you now have to repeat all the previous steps, its easier than clearing the emergency codes.

5: Grab another cup of coffee while you’re back there.

6: Here’s where it gets tricky, once it’s fired up you have about 90 seconds to clear the faulty ground code from the hydraulics. Now if you want to crawl down under the machine and fix that cable be my guest, just pull the tread plate up and snake the rod laying next to my desk down there to make a connection. You’ll have to do this every 30 minutes.

7: Now grab a couple of hands and have them load the machine up with plate, have a cup while you do this it really pisses them off.

8: Calibrate the axis while they’re doing this, if Z doesn’t come in hit the panel nest to the loader , it’s a piece of sheet steel with a sensor on it.

*Mechanical arms zoom around and the machine falls into place as a forklift full of plate approaches.

9: Now load the program off the work order, I assume you have been following that. Its 4 buttons and a program number, if you can’t do that go home now.

10: Pour yourself the last cup, make more coffee.

11: Green button, drag the toggle down to about 30 percent, if you get below 25 percent the machine gets angry. Yellow button is a pause, the red one makes you start over.

12: Machine speeds: sounds like a car crash:30 Choppy: 35-40 Less Choppy: 40-60. Once she’s warmed up and humming work up to about 80 percent. If you’re told to go to 100 say you did and leave it at 80.

*Fresh cup with the machine humming at half speed.

13: There are several more rules included within this journal. 17 more that I bothered to write down. This machine does not follow rules, it does not run the same from day to day, and no one will be helping you after today.

13.1: If you are reading this I, Gabe, will not be back. This young man or women has my collective knowledge on this monstrosity, and the burden now falls on them. I believe I will visit the November Bridge before you find me.

Empty pages.

There is nothing more in the journal.

17: 14,15, and 16 will help you get out of here. If you’re sharp you’ll find them, if you’re dumb you won’t move this note, run as fast as you can and I hope to see you.

Many months later.

When they have all been found.

14, scribbled on the upper arm of the machine, I found it when a belt gave.

14: 1 6 7

15, I found pulling the sludge bins out from under the machine, etched into the corner, covered by one’s hand if they were not looking.

15: 9 6 2

16, The easiest one, given to me by a dark-haired girl when we earned a company meal this last week. Scribbled on her wrist, I’ll be able to walk right out the front doors with a 9 letter code.

16: 9 9 9

Finally Free.
