"Three Witches, MacBeth" by James Henry Nixon, 1831 from The Enchanted Booklet

Introduction

This is an example story for my "HallOctoberEen" inspired by an image from The Enchanted Booklet that you can see here:

The music is "Overture" from Polanski's "Macbeth" by The Third Ear Band

The politicians were running out of options. They were servants to money, nothing else and dared not go against their masters.

Their masters demanded more and more revenue from taxes and services, and complied because they did not want to rock the boat or lose their own position.

The people of the country were becoming more unhappy, seeing their taxes pay for the lavish lifestyles of oligarchs instead of being used to run the country properly.

Some politicians said they could consult the three witches, or the weird sisters as they were sometimes known.

They were told to meet on a desolate moor, with a tribute on All Hallows Eve at midnight.

This, the politicians did, and gave the witches their tribute, and asked the witches:

"What can we do to make things right with the nation?"

The witches answered:

"The answer is simple. You must make the rich, the corporations, pay their dues. They have so much money that YOU have given them, which they will never spend, that they must be forced to pay their share. They expect to use your infrastructure, but do not pay for it. They exploit loopholes and sit on their piles of money, while those who do the work barely scrape a living wage. The rich must pay their way"

"But if we do that, the rich will leave"

"So? You think they will leave the source of their income? Do it, or you are doomed to more toil and trouble, and the nation will come for you bearing pitchforks and torches"

With that, the witches disappeared into the night like ghostly spectres, leaving the politicians with the advice and wisdom.

This was not going to be easy or simple.

β€œThis was not going to be easy or simple”—that does not necessarily mean that the politicians are going to listen to the witches. Nice job on combining Macbeth with modern political issues. It really drives the point home.

What a story that fits with today political outlooks. I hope they listen to the witches but they probably won't.

Sounds like the witches need to boil up a stew….excited to see the new challenge!

This is brilliant...and just...also kinda awful reminder of how crappy the UK is right now...unless they get a grip or consult witches. ha. Great story, Mike and thanks for the nod to your October challenge. You'd think it being monthly would help my old brain remember - but no! I will definitely put something forward for it!
