They Should Know

A Chatfiction Argument

Introduction

This is based on many arguments that I have had in my life both in and out of work. The situations have all happened so although this is fiction this is based on those events. It is highly likely that they are happening as you read this.

The music is "Shout" by Tears For Fears which is shouty enough for this story.

They Should Know

Them: "You cannot tell them, they should know. If they don't know it's their problem. It is not in our remit to mollycoddle them and tell them things that they should know already"

Me: "But if we don't give them the information that they need then how are they going to find it out? We don't publish publicly, so there is nowhere for them to find the information if we do not give it to them"

Them: "Yes, but if they haven't the information, then that shows that they have not researched properly. Are they really the sort of people we want working with us? We need people who will hit the ground running, not people we have to continually look out for."

Me: "Their resumés showed their suitability for interviews, and their interviews showed their suitability to become part of our organization, and now you a questioning them because they are not in possession of basic information that we should be the ones who provide it to them. This happens every time, you say I shouldn't provide the information, I do , you report me and have me disciplined, we take them on , they perform brilliantly, you take the credit and the bonuses, until next time"

Them: "Well the method always works, it is a great way to work"

Me: "Which is why this is my last time, I am handing my notice in, I have been offered another position"

Them: "You can't leave, you are the best Project Coordinator we have, we can't do without you"

Me: "I am not a Project Coordinator, you and your manager blocked my promotion for the last three times, so I 'm on my way, the money is better too"

Them: "But it's not about the money, it's the prestige of the position you hold"

Me: "Remember I do the job, but am not paid for it, am not recognized for the work I do, and others get the credit for the work I have done, and if I stay then there is no reason for anything to change is there"

Them: "If you stay we may consider you for promotion next year, we need you here"

Me: "No you won't, you are just bothered about yourself, but look at it this way, you won't have to argue with me anymore. I know how good my work is, you and your manager know how good it is, you have had years to reward it and done nothing, so now your chance is gone"

I sent the required information off to the new starters so they would be fully prepared for this clique-ridden place, and I know they will do well, maybe one unfortunate might end up in my seat.

I don't regret leaving. I worked hard, did well, and was not rewarded at all well for my work. They will blame me for the failures that will now occur, but again that is something that happens a lot, blame the runner, the rat that left the sinking ship.

While people are well aware of what I do, it will only matter to them when I stop doing it, and that is something that makes me terribly sad.

Unfortunately, this is probably true somewhere in almost everyone's life. This is very relatable. Great read!

  • My questions are: real or fictional? anecdotal or typical?

  • Sadly, this kinda stuff happens everywhere. I'm so sorry this happened to you too 🥺

When it comes to a job, we are all replaceable. And "they" will also get the most out of you possible for the least reward possible.

Wow! I can so relate to this piece, Mike! I just left a business at the beginning of December that is collapsing under its own weight in my absence. Happily, I recently signed a contract to work less hours for more income for a company that takes care of its employees. Great work!

That's the thing with being taken for granted, nobody cares until you're gone. Well done, Mike.

    Good piece...clearly illustrated the point!
