🥀 The Last Light

Sometimes, the ones we seek to save are already lost

By LucianPublished 9 months ago 2 min read

The house has been vacant for a long time.

The neighbors said it was haunted.

You never believed it. You came to look for your sister, who disappeared in this town three months ago. The police found nothing, the search team gave up, and even her friends stopped talking about her.

But you knew she must still be there. She must still be waiting for you.

That night, there was no moon in the sky, only dark clouds like faded cotton wool, which made people breathless.

You held an old oil lamp and pushed open the door of the house.

The door hinge made a long whine.

The air was filled with dampness and mold, as if time itself had rotted.

The room was dark. You lit the oil lamp, and the dim flames stretched the shadows long and crooked.

With every step, the wooden floor under your feet made an unsettling creaking sound. It was as if someone was following you step by step.

You whispered her name.

Only a hollow echo responded to you.

A door upstairs opened gently.

You looked up and saw only a narrow staircase leading to darkness.

The oil lamp trembled in your hand, and the flame almost went out several times.

But you still walked up step by step.

On the wall of the corridor, there were some yellowed photos. Most of them were blurry, but you saw a familiar figure in one of them -

a girl with long hair draped over her shoulders, smiling at the camera.

Her smile was pale and stiff, not like that of a living person.

Your throat was tight and you could hardly shout.

At the end of the second floor, the door was half-open, and a faint light came through the gap.

You were almost pushed by some force, slowly approaching.

Behind the door was a dilapidated bedroom.

In the corner, with her back to you, stood a slender figure.

It was her. You recognized her figure.

You choked and called her name.

She slowly turned her head, with a strange smile on her face - sad and relieved.

She opened her mouth, as if to say something, but you couldn't hear the sound.

Just as you wanted to rush over, her body suddenly dispersed like dust, gently and silently.

Only a faintly flickering oil lamp remained alone.

You rushed over, trying to grab something, but there was nothing.

There was only her faint smell in the air, like flowers in early spring, and like... a dying sigh.

You sat with the oil lamp for a long time, until the flames finally went out and the darkness completely swallowed you.

My sister is gone.

Maybe she had left a long time ago, leaving only a little shadow, left to you who was most unwilling to let go.

Outside the window, the sky began to brighten.

But there will never be light in your world again.
