The Hidden Garden
A mystical story about a garden that only appears to those who truly need it, offering solace and answers

Sophie had always been a child of curious tastes. While other children played with toys or read books, she spent her days wandering through the woods behind her grandmother's cottage, chasing shadows, and listening to the stories the wind whispered through the leaves. There was one place, however, which had always eluded her—a place hidden deep within the forest. It was an ancient, rusty, wrought-iron gate, half-hidden by evergreen ivy and barbed bushes. The children at the village would point to it in whispers as the gate leading to the Hidden Garden, a place said to be lost in time.
Every time Sophie had looked for it, the gate vanished, as if it didn't wish to be found. Then something changed one day while she wandered in the woods. The air was heavy with expectation; through the trees, a strange light filters and beckons her steps. With her heart in her throat, she followed it, between fear and excitement, until she stood right before the elusive gate.
The rust was gone from the iron, and the vines which obscured it had drawn back to reveal leaves and flowers intricately etched in the metal. It hummed almost with a life of its own; she could feel some energy calling her closer. She reached out with a trembling hand, half-expecting it to vanish once more, and the gate swung open with a soft, almost welcoming creak.
Sophie stepped through into a world of beauty and otherness. A garden was stretching out in every direction, lit by some soft, golden light, which seemed to emanate from everywhere and nowhere all at once. Its fragrances of flowers she had never known filled the air, more exquisite than any she had ever smelled before. Tall trees with silver bark and emerald leaves towered over her, their high branches heavy with fruit that shined like small suns. While Sophie was indeed mesmerized by the sights and smells, it was something more. There lived magic in the air. As she walked, the garden responded. Flowers turned to meet her, shimmering with colors that changed with each step. Trees whispered secrets in a language she could almost understand. Small creatures, unlike any she had seen before, peered out from behind bushes and rocks, their eyes full of curiosity.
Further along the garden, Sophie stumbled upon a brook with incredibly clear water, on whose surface—what shocked her—the sky above was not reflected but scenes of other worlds, places of unimaginable beauty and wonder. She squatted by its edge, entranced by the view, until her gaze fell onto ripples in the water. She looked up and saw a figure standing on the opposite bank—a young woman with spun-gold hair and eyes that shone with a soft, ethereal light.
"You've found the Hidden Garden," the woman said. Her voice was melodic and soothing. "Few ever do."
"Who are you?" Sophie asked her voice barely above a whisper.
"I am the Guardian of this place," the woman replied. "The garden has chosen you, Sophie. You are special, destined to protect its secrets and keep its magic alive."
A surge of warmth in her chest, belonging she had never known, coursed through Sophie. The Guardian extended her hand, and as Sophie took it, a rush of energy ran through her veins. The garden pulsed with life, and for the first time, Sophie grasped the whispers of the trees, the flowers' songs, and the language of creatures.
"You are part of the garden now," said the Guardian. "And for this gift, a great responsibility is put upon you. The magic of the Garden must be guarded. There are those who would take it to themselves."
Sophie nodded. The task ahead weighed heavily upon her, but she wasn't afraid—the garden had chosen her, and she was ready to do whatever it took to defend it.
Knowing the time to depart had come as sunset colored the horizon and its shadows stretched long across the fairytale scene, Sophie smiled back at the Guardian, her eyes filled with pride.
"Remember, Sophie," the Guardian added, "the garden is always here, waiting for you. And so am I."
With this, Sophie stepped through the gate to the back and out into the cool evening air of the real world on her skin. But inside, she knew she was no longer that young girl who had wandered into the woods that morning. She had discovered the hidden garden, and in that discovery, a magic that would be hers forever.
As she walked away from the forest and toward her grandmother's cottage, the gate slowly swung shut behind her, waiting for the day she would return.
