The Changing

By Linda FriesenPublished 4 years ago 11 min read

In 2028 at approximately 9 pm, a car was driving across a bridge. Inside, a girl behind the wheel. She was heading north to meet a friend. It started raining heavily, instantly blocking the road from sight. The car swerved and the back end hit a tree. The car spun out of control and went over the edge of the bridge. The girl slowly opened the door tried to crawl out. The temperature outside was 53 degrees below zero. Her heart beat slowed so it would beat about once or twice a minute.

Around 9:15 the lady was dragged out of the vehicle. A person stood over her body watching her die. He muttered two simple words.

"I am sorry," he bent over her body and then left without looking at her again. Slowly the temperature got warmer to the girl and she got enough strength to pull herself towards the road.

The girl woke up in her room. Everything was fine, she wasn't hurt. But something was wrong. She could somehow sense it. She looked at her arm. The cut from the crash was gone. Not even a scar. She looked down at her leg. She was sure she broke it. Now it was functioning perfectly fine.

She walked into the kitchen and she could smell the food in the fridge. Her smelling was more intensified, along with her hearing and sight. Something was wrong. The floorboards creaked as slight weight was added. She turned around and there was a boy standing in the doorway.

"Hi. I'm Sebastian," he said. The girl stared at him almost speechless.

"What are you doing in my house?" She hissed at him.

"I'm here to explain," he said stepping closer. "Your confused and I can help with that," she nodded but didn't say anything.

"What's your name?" Sebastian asked.

"Quinn," the girl hesitantly answered.

"I can help you," Sebastian said to her stepping forward. Quinn back up and scowled at him.

"Get out of my house." Sebastian stood his ground and in a firm yet gentle voice started explaining what had happened.

"I know what's happening to you. You are confused, and you don't need to be." He said slowly taking a step closer. She backed up, bumping into the counter.

"You're not hurt, right?" He asked referring to her leg. She didn't respond and he continued. "You can hear clearly can't you? Smell things you couldn't before?" She slowly nodded her head, but still not trusting the stranger.

"How do you..."

"What's happening to you, happened to me too. I didn't have anyone to help me, but you, I can help you." He said.

"That doesn't answer my question. How do you know what is happening to me?" She said as he avoided her gaze.

"I did this to you, I'm sorry."

"What's happening to me?" Quinn almost yelled at him.

"You're changing." He replied calmly.

"Changing?" She questioned and Sebastian nodded.

"You don't remember last night, do you?" He asked.

"No."

"You were dying. I had to do something." He said.

"What exactly did you do to me?" Quinn asked him. He looked at the floor and didn't say anything for a long time.

"I changed you into a werewolf." He said slowly looking up to her. They made eye contact and she bursted out laughing.

"You're kidding right?" She took a deep breath and started laughing again. When she saw his face she stifled a giggle.

"I'm serious." He said and she looked at him with flat look.

"Get out of my house before i call the cops." She said firmly. He sighed and walked to the door.

"Tomorrow night is a full moon -"

"And i'm going to be the first person in space." Quinn stated sarcastically. Sebastian walked out without saying another word. Quinn didn't move for a long time, thinking everything over.

A few days after the full moon had passed and Quinn decided to go shopping with her friends. "So what happened with Sebastian?" Rebecca said breaking the silence.

"Oh can it will you Becca? Leave her with the thought of him." Victoria giggled.

"Thanks Tori. That's so very kind of you." Quinn said sarcastically. She looked over and noticed that Alexandra was really quiet.

"Alex, is something wrong?"

"There is a boy -"

"Since when do you associate with boys. I thought you were done after the whole Marcus situation?" Victoria cut in.

"If you would shut your trap for 2 seconds -" Becca started.

"Guys! Quit it." Quinn snapped at them.

"Well, this guy that has been following us..." Alexandra said quietly, that shut everyone up.

"What?" All three of them asked at the same time.

"Yeah he has been for the past 20 minutes."

Quinn and Tori were about get into a heated argument but got interrupted by Becca.

"Guy's not in public." Quinn stared at her for a moment before walking away.

"Quinn!" Alex called her but she ignored them and kept walking to the girls bathroom. She put water on her face and when she looked up, she saw Sebastian in the mirror. Before she could scream, he covers her mouth.

"Don't scream. I just wanna talk." Quinn nodded and Sebastian slowly moved his hand away.

"Why are you in the girl's bathroom?"

"How else am I supposed to talk to you?"

"Um, walk up to me and say 'hey' like a normal person?" Quinn suggested.

"Well it's kind of difficult when all of your friends are trying to scope me out, I just have to ask you about the other night."

"You mean when you broke into my house?"

"Yeah... so the night of the full moon..." Sebastian was cut off by a scream. Quinn turned around and saw Becca in the doorway. Sebastian bolts into a stall and Becca bursts out laughing.

"Is that him?" Becca asked and Quinn nodded. Sebastian could hear them walk out and he slowly opened the door. When the door was opened he saw an old lady and he started to get hit on the head with a cane, repeatedly.

Later Quinn was back at home and Sebastian decided to make a surprise visit, again. Except this time Quinn took him seriously. When Sebastian stopped by the first time and mentioned the full moon, it got Quinn thinking. So she set up a camera and it showed her everything that happened to her that night. It showed her transform into some kind of creature. She wanted to know everything but what Sebastian was telling her, didn't match up to what she saw.

Yellow glowing eyes, fangs, pointy ears, it didn't match. They eyes she saw were glowing bright orange, and she transformed into an animal!

"Are you sure?" Quinn asked and told Sebastian what happened. He looked confused but didn't say anything. When she finished he told her he had to make a phone call. He didn't know what was happening to her either. She could hear all of his conversation he was having, because of her enhanced hearing.

The next few days Quinn spent the whole time hiding in her room. She didn't want to hurt anyone. Her friends had stopped by a few times but she didn't let them in. She pretended she wasn't home. It worked every time until Sebastian stopped by. He didn't come through the door but rather the window.

"Have you been hiding the whole time?" He asked her as she sat on the couch, and she nodded her head.

"I don't know what I am, you don't know what I am. So I don't see the point in going out and putting everyone in danger." Quinn replied. Sebastian nodded his head in understatement. He didn't say anything for a long time.

"You won't hurt anyone." He said softly, but she just shook her head. "I know you won't hurt anyone."

"How can you be sure?" She asked him.

"I'm not." Sebastian said meekly, "but I believe in you because I've seen so many crazy things happen like this from the other guys."

"The other guys?" Quinn asked in a confused and curious voice.

"Come with me and I will show you," Sebastian grabbed Quinn by the hand and dragged her out the door and down to his car. The moment that Quinn got in the vehicle she started to panic about all the horrible things that might be waiting at the end of this trip. As soon as they rolled up to the house Quinn's fears and worries shrunk. This isn't so bad she thought to herself.

"So this is your house?" Quinn asked.

Sebastian hesitated as they walked up.

"Well sort of, you see your not the first person to have something strange like this happen to you. I live with a couple of other guys who had similar things happen to them that is happening to you." As they walked through the door they were greeted by three young and fairly attractive gentlemen. "Let me introduce you to the gang, this is Hendrick,"

"Hello," Hendrick whispered.

"Hendrick isn't much of a talker" Sebastian snickered and Hendrick blushed.

"You must be Quinn, I'm so very pleased to meet you. I'm Pablo. I have heard so much about you." Pablo said putting an arm around Hendrick, "So excited I finally get to meet Quinn, What took you so long Sebastian, I've been dying to meet her for ages." Sebastian blushed as Quinn looked around awkwardly. Finally Ryan walked down the steps and noticed Quinn standing there spoke out saying,

"This is the girl that's different? You never would've thought something like that, eh sweetheart." Quinn blushed and Sebastian started telling him to back off and to be less creepy. Just when Quinn though that things couldn't get any weirder Vincent walks in.

"WHAT IS SHE DOING HERE!!!!" Quinn cowards behind Bash, Pablo and Hendrick darted off to different rooms pretending that they don't know what's about to happen.

"I bought here here to talk to Ryan" Sebastian exclaimed, "She's going through what we went through, she's like us."

"She is nothing like us" Vincent shouted, "I want her out of my house right now!" Bash hesitated and gave in, so he took Quinn by the hand and they hopped back into the car.

After an awkwardly long and quiet car ride, Sebastian asked while sitting in front of Quinn's house,

"So, that's my pack, and the.... um that was Vincent. What do you think?" Sebastian asked hopeful that Quinn wouldn't reply.

"I really like them, they all seem super nice, except for Vincent. I think-" Quinn was cut off at the sight of her friends who were standing right outside of her house. "Drive!" Quinn yelled at Bash in hopes that her friends wouldn't see her. "Do you think that they noticed me?"

"I really don't know," Sebastian pondered, "Why don't you want them to see me?"

"I thought that you didn't want them to see you" Quinn got real quiet., "I don't think that I'm ready for them to know and They would ask a lot questions."

"So what now then?" Quinn asked and Sebastian didn't answer. Sebastian continued to drive to their unknown destination.

"Bash, what do I do now? My life has changed because of you. How do I adapt?" Quinn asked Sebastian. The corners of his lips twitched upwards.

"What did you call me?" He asked and Quinn looked at him.

"Sebastian." She answered but he shook his head.

"You called me Bash." He said and Quinn looked at him.

"Yeah i guess i did." She said. Sebastian parked the car and Quinn looked out the window.

"Five, four, three, two-" Sebastian's counting got interrupted by a person knocking on the window. He opened the door with a smile.

"You losing your touch." He said.

"Not my fault." An accent drifted through the air as Quinn got out.

"Hey Pablo." Quinn said with a wave.

"She remembers my name!" He said excitedly with a fist bump in the air.

"Bash, where are we?" Quinn asked.

"Whoa, hold the phone." Pablo said holding out his hands as Quinn walked over to their side and stood next to Sebastian.

"You already have a nickname and you didn't even ask her on a date yet? Dang boy, sticking the moves now are ya bud?" Pablo said with a grin as Quinn looked at the ground blushing.

"So um is Hendrick coming?" Sebastian asked changing the subject.

"Should be soon."

"What are we doing."

"Testing you out. Seeing how good your skills are." Pablo answered.

Hendrick joined them a few seconds later and they all started walking. They made Quinn close her eyes and she was to try and find them based on sent. Then, they made her catch rocks that they would throw at her at the same time. This went on for a few hours until Quinn got hurt. She got a deep slash across her arm, and they all watched it heal in a matter of seconds.

"Whoa, that's intense. I normally heal within a minute." Pablo said starting at Quinn.

"You still don't know what she is?" Hendrick asked quietly.

"I think she is one of us, just stronger." Sebastian said, all humor from him gone.

"So what do I do now?" Quinn asked no one in particular.

"Stay with us. You're one of us now so we stick together." Hendrick answered.

So that's what happened. Quinn stared hanging with the guys more and her own friends less. The guys taught her control and even though Vincent didn't like her at first, he helped her the difference between werewolf and human. It was difficult and frustrating at the beginning but soon Quinn was a pro. She was strong and smart like Pablo and Hendrick, but not as good as Vincent.

After a long time of the six of them hanging out together, they decided to go and play fetch in the woods. They had seen someone they thought they'd never see. Suddenly, Justin was standing there. He had broad shoulders, a muscular body and a very hairy face, and started to attack the pack. "You ruined my life!"

"It wasn't my fault." Sebastian said defensively.

"Let's get him," Vincent yelled angrily, "a pack that grows together, stays together,"

They all started beating on him and Quinn slowly backed away. After when Justin lay motionless on the ground Sebastian noticed she was gone.

"Quinn!" Pablo yelled out but all he could hear was her feet pounding on the ground as she ran. He started after her and dragged Sebastian with him. They bolted after her but they knew she was a lot faster than them. When they finally caught up to her she was standing on the edge of a cliff,

"I can't deal with this life," she yelled aggressively. Bash stopped and thought hard about his next move.

"I'm going to jump," Quinn murmured but Bash couldn't hear that so he yelled at her to stay because he could help her. Just as he started talking Hendrick walked up.

"Quinn come back, please. I can help." Sebastian begged. Quinn started to slowly walk towards Sebastian and gave him a sad smile. Bash reached out his hand but before Quinn could get close enough, she turned around and ran off the edge. Bash ran after her, screamed and leapt after her as fast as he could, in hopes of trying to save the girl of his dreams. Pablo leaned over the ledge and flinched at what he saw.

"There gone now." He said disappointed.

"Let's not do this for our vacation Pablo?" Hendrick muttered as him and Pablo walked away, hand in hand.
