Once Upon a Lake
Once upon a lake, Time stood still—which may not have been the brightest thing it ever did since it was in a boat at the time. But the lake was so beautiful with the leaves of fall in the riparian forests changing hue & casting their reflections upon the surface of the water. It was a moment when the air was so sweet, the breeze so delicate, the temperature so ideal & the sun, moon & stars in such perfect harmony—& as anyone with an ounce of sense can tell you, there simply is no more wondrous sensation of peace, joy, contentment & grace as to be out in a boat on the middle of a lake with such a day—well, Time just never wanted that moment to end.

Flames to Ashes
Chapter 1-Revenge I stood in front of what used to be my home. Now, all that stood in its place was a half burnt wall, covered in soot and ash, small flames still flickering. All around it was ash, small fires where wood remained, and dark smoke rising up into the sky.

First Sign of Summer
Traffic was getting thicker. Car horns were going off all over the place. The doors to the restaurants along the way had people spilling out into the streets. There was a sea of smiles, a wave of laughter moving down the street toward the ballpark. As we neared the parking area, it felt as though we were just another cow being herded toward the slaughter house. Finally, we found a parking spot and headed toward the park. I could feel the electricity in the air. The sea of people headed toward the turnstiles into the park. As I stepped through the turnstile, I felt that I was stepping into a different world. As I was walked toward the field, the air was filled with the smell of buttered popcorn and hotdogs on the grill. These are the smells that remind me that baseball is finally here. I walked under the archway to the field. My world opened up when I saw the dark green field and the brick red pitcher’s mound. I took a deep breath and smelled the sweet scent of fresh cut grass. The base lines marked the perfectly shaped diamond. The grounds crew had delicately raked all the signs of human touch away from the pitcher’s mound.

Opening the door with a soft pop he took out the tea-filled mug, looking around making sure his wife wasn’t around to scold him for abandoning the kettle once again. The well-meaning birthday gift was only used a handful of times by the recipient.

If I Go Missing (Chapter 1)
Chapter 1: The sun shone down, burning Sara’s shoulders to the point where it was beginning to be painful. She rummaged through her backpack, searching for the sunscreen she always kept with her. Depositing a generous amount, she reapplied it to her shoulders which were already turning red. After she was protected from the UV rays, she turned her attention back to the wall on the far side of town. Just like she had for every day for the majority of her life, she was face to face with her best friend, Molly. Her ethereal smile, breaking through, captivating every person who walked by, making them feel compelled to stop.
