The Man in the Shadows. Content Warning.
Jessica Bowden’s breath came in short, shallow gasps as she gripped the steering wheel of her car, her trembling fingers slick with sweat. The flashing blue and red lights of the approaching police cars cast eerie shadows across the darkened street, illuminating the old farm house she had once called home. Now, it was a crime scene—a place of horror, a place where her mother lay dead.

Fox Hunt; Chapter 10
By the time I reach the next town I'm heading for, the sun has reached its peak. I study the town as I approach. It's small, smaller than the town I grew up in. I can see straight through it. In a town like this, I'm bound to be noticed. My jaw tightens in annoyance. This is not a town I want to go through. I'm sure to be noticed. Yet I don't have a choice. I had skipped getting supplies in the last town. After talking with that militiaman, I hadn't dared to stay longer than necessary. Of course, not getting supplies hadn't proved too problematic the first two days, but now I needed the extra supplies I should have gotten back in the last town. Hopefully, I was just being paranoid and they weren’t looking for me.

So The Story Goes...A Flash In the Dark
As Jaylene rushed the kids into the back of their dusty green sedan, Carl set some rudimentary traps along the kitchen window and kitchen door. There was only one way into the house from the back garden. Although it was just a spark of light that caught him unaware and forced him into action, he knew what it meant. They would soon be here, and while he wasn't one to back down from a fight, he had to stay focused on getting Jaylene and his two daughters, Maya and Adina, to safety.
