4. "hard to deal with"
ONE YEAR AGO: AN UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTER "Colby, I have a favor to ask," Ryan spoke on the end of the line. I wasn't even sure why I picked up -- I rarely ever did for anyone, but he also rarely ever called, and that fact alone may have been enough to move me to see what he needed. Surely, he wouldn't call without reason, and three seconds in, he let me know that without embarrassment or hesitation. He actually seemed a bit desperate, which was unlike him. For a group of college graduates that couldn't get the jobs we deserved, he had his life together.

23. "puffed up with pride"
"Is something wrong, sir?" I twiddled my thumbs in the passenger seat of his police car, where he had led me to in the middle of night, the only source of light the one above our heads. The clashing at my tips didn't produce any amount of sound, but it felt like I could hear every time they clashed in the back of my head.

22. "headstrong"
"I'm not understanding. Isn't love happy? Why she doesn't want to tell of it?" Jewee's question was the last thing logical that went down, which is sad because the only things that came out of us that made sense were questions that were answer-less.

21. "betrayers"
Are the good memories you hold with someone when they go away a blessing or a curse? It sounds terrible to ask, I realize that. Heck, it sounds like it shouldn't even be a question that a human should fathom. A person should easily know that the goodness of the past when a person goes away is all they have left to remember that person, to hold them close, and without having to debate, without having to wonder, they acknowledge it as fact that it's a blessing. But if you think about it long and hard, is it really?

20. "without love of goodness"
"Jewee?" Jared called his name when we noticed him stir. We couldn't get him back into his room unless Jewee himself authorized us to get in from the inside, and in his unconscious state, he was unable to do anything like that, so we had to make things as comfortable as possible for him on the outside cement, with his head propped up against the wall.

19. "fierce"
"Fine," Jayvee agreed, licking her lips. Her pupils trembled out of despair before the girl that had murder in her eyes, and they trembled out of the shattering of her heart that we couldn't see, but on the rest of her face, she looked at Nova as competition -- as someone she wanted to beat out, conquer, and come out a winner after playing by every rule.

18. "without self control"
ewee reluctantly took a step out of his room, solely because he felt that he had to after the command. The message of our knocks and hollers came through evidently, but he didn't get comfortable. He was convinced he had no reason to. Eyes squinting at the sunlight, which was still new and bright for him, he scanned over every one of our faces, one by one, expecting someone to say something before he did, or to come up with some explanation as to why we would bother him.

16. "not open to any agreement"
"Where's Jared?" I approached Nova when I saw her the next morning. I didn't feel like speaking with anyone because I had enough on my own plate, but when she was evidently going through worse than I was, it cancelled all of that out. Being there for her felt like something I needed to do, but more than that, something I wanted to do. It made me feel better if I was with her.

15. "having no natural affection"
So Jared loved Nova and Jewee loved Nova, but Nova loved Ryan and Ryan liked Jayvee. I drew arrows in my head from person to person, forming the triangle that wasn't exactly a triangle anymore, but a blob of confusion and broken hearts. People that like the idea of love like to say that love is simple, and for the lucky people in the world, I don't doubt that it can be, but again that's only for the lucky people. For normal, average people, it's more complex than we want to believe, and this was the evidence to prove that. Only in one of those scenarios did a story of love find possibility to begin, and it tragically ended before it truly got started.

14. "disloyal"
"'Love makes you do crazy things.' You hear before the saying, no?" Jewee mentioned more confidently than I was used to, coming from him. It was -- or it seemed to be the first sentence he was able to finish since we circled up together, and it didn't fit the scenario whatsoever. We were talking about the unknown gore of this world that I've chosen for years to dismiss, and that I finally had to stare right into like this dark abyss, but here this kid was, talking about romance.

3. "critical times"
THREE YEARS AGO: A CASUAL HANG-OUT Nova twirled her index finger in a strand of her hair flirtatiously, as if she didn't have an audience, and the scene was unaccepted by my vision. My brain couldn't process it no matter how hard it tried. I don't want to say that I can speak for all of us, but I'm dang near to certain that I can.
