Crooked
I woke up early, before the sun was up, and slipped silently out of bed into my robe, leaving Jane asleep as I headed for the living room. I reached under the couch for the paraphernalia I needed and stepped onto the balcony. The last thing I wanted was for the numbing effect I gained from the drugs to wear off and allow me to accidentally slip inside Jane’s mind, seeing all of her dirty little secrets while she slept.

Knight Among Jackals
Dates within the Sentinel Corps were a tricky business. Relationships within the same unit were severely frowned upon, especially between an officer and enlisted. It was normal practice for enlisted to receive transfers when they became romantically involved with their commanding officer. Since taking command of the unit, Sentinel Lieutenant Walter Otarion could count the number of times he’d been on a date on one hand. There was little opportunity to meet girls outside of work, until now.

世界末日 The edge of Earth
The snowy landscape stretches as far as the eye can see. Snow and ice form curly waves with sharp edges, as teeth protruding from the mouth of a behemoth. Everything is blue and white, with smog covering the atmosphere, adding a surreal effect. Silence abounds in all directions, interrupted only by the engines of ATVs and people talking. Is it Siberia? The Taiga? No, it is but the city of Harbin. This barren wasteland is the frozen surface of the Songhua (Sungar) river.

The leaves in one painting blew lazily from an absent breeze. And when the Lady in Red smiled at her, she smiled back.

The Blessed City
The sun disappeared; the cool heat vanished off her skin. Her vision fizzled back. Speck by speck until she had to blink to adjust to a new dark. Torches lined the walls in a cave. Carving a curved pathway from rock. The light illuminated the faces of their captors. They had drawn their hoods from their faces, removed the cloth from their mouths. And they were staring at them.

The Blessed City
They'd left food in their rooms and fresh linens to wash with. Between not eating since midday the day before and training half the morning, her appetite was hearty. Maleah ate until her stomach felt as if it might burst. When Arik came to retrieve her, she didn't fuss over the ruse he pulled in the circle nor argue about the efficacy of his actions. Or lack of. Instead, she kept to an easy conversation as she followed him through the winding halls of the castle.

The Blessed City
The knock at the door roused her awake. Outside, the sun had hardly a ray in the sky. Tossing her face into the pillows, she willed the knock away. When it thudded again, she groaned and rolled out of bed. Forgetting herself, she jerked the door open.
