First Contact
The day of first contact with an alien species started off like any other day. I woke up early, made my morning coffee, and got ready for work. I don't know why I walked outside since I usually had my cup of coffee inside the house, but for some inexplicable reason I wanted to smell the fresh air. There was an eerie fog, it hung over the air like some sort of messenger. I caught it out of the corner of my eye, hovering in the sky. It must have been 20 miles across with an almost ethereal chrome or metallic glow. I just stared at it for a while like a deer in headlights. My objective reality had always been that we were alone in the universe until that moment. I don't know how much time passed, minutes felt like hours. I was in a state of cognitive dissonance it was almost as if I was having an out of body experience, like I was watching myself watch this object. I felt the same way the Aztecs must have felt when they saw the Spanish ships on the horizon headed towards their shores. I walked inside in a sort of haze, I was in shock. I poured myself more coffee, and it overflowed on the countertop because my cup was still full. At this point I grabbed my phone while trying to still my shaking hand, and I searched for one word "news". The news headlines felt like a smack in the face, it was what my brain already knew but my perception of reality had yet to catch up to. There was a tingle of goosebumps all over my body, the headline read "First Contact with Alien Species". The shock started to wear off, and I started ask myself questions.

Terrestrial (book 1)
Lana made her way outside to prepare the grill. It's New year's day 2019 at 7pm. Her plan is to teach Sean how to bbq.”Alright Sean first, you want to turn on the propane nice and steady.” “But what if it explodes?” “Nonsense, who told you that? Dad?” “Well… Yes..” “He’s just a goof, don’t take what he says literally. Remember what mom said.” As they are standing on the front lawn, Sean looks up into the sky. He gets Lana's attention and says “they're back". She knows exactly what he means. For the past year strange lights have been in the sky. It was the talk of the neighborhood. The first time they saw something strange was 1 year prior. It was just sitting in the sky but it suddenly flew away at an astronomical speed almost 10,000 mph breaking the sound barrier. Ever since, it's been lurking in the sky, shining it's light and going dark at random intervals at a certain speed in a continuous loop. Lana looked up to where Sean was pointing. As she stared at the object, her eyes began to feel like they were going to pop. They both continue to stare at this Unidentified Spacecraft. This is unlike anything both Lana and Sean have seen before. something that is not of this earth.... Their minds unable to process what they had just witnessed. They tried to ignore it, But the bright texture of the craft and the beaming light..made them feel something deep inside them…An emotion that just can't be described. Shadows began to dance in their peripheral vision. As fear crawled up Lana's spine, she realized what was happening. The Dogs barked, and Insects began to swarm. It was like something from a horror movie. These insects, as microscopic as they are, really pack quite the punch and they continue to swarm. “AHHH!” Lana screams as they grow even larger in numbers, Sean narrowly gets out of their position. “STAY RIGHT THERE LANA, I’LL GET THE BUG SPRAY!!” Scott yelled from the porch. By the time he returned, everything was quiet. No bugs, no dogs and no more lights in the sky. Lana and the gang decided to call it a night and head inside.Thunderstorms approach the house knocking out the power in the neighborhood. Lana, being the only one awake, grabs a candle and heads downstairs “It’s always one damn thing after another” She checks the circuit breaker, only problem is all the power is turned on… But with no electricity coming through. Suddenly there's a knock on the door. It's the neighbor "Eddie". Eddie smoking a joint pops in, “How are you doin tonight sexy?” “Fuck off!” Lana slaps Eddie in the face, “What the hell are you doing out in a thunderstorm?” “Just came to say hello to an old flame of mine.” Lana rolls her eyes “Pfft, you wish.” Right when Lana is about to shut the door, Eddie's foot holds it open. “Can I come in?” " I need to ask you about something I've been seeing in the sky" “Please. Leave. Now. Before I wake my brothers and kick your ass out or better yet call the police, it’s been unpleasant seeing you again.” " Okay, okay I'll leave.” “But I swear, it's really important.” Lana opens the door back up “I’ll give you 2 minutes, go.” He begins to tell her about what's been happening to all the neighbors. About the lights and the insect's. Lana pauses and asks Eddie questions. “Ok, Eddie, what did they look like?” " There were two bright lights in the sky, one was stationary and the other was flying back and forth, and there were so many bugs.” Sean asks “were the bugs themselves bright or were you talking about the lights?” " the lights." Sean looks through his map of cell towers across the area. “This Tower in the corner of Urban Street went out yesterday and in the newspaper this morning two young children went missing. I’m curious, Eddie.. You wouldn’t happen to know where they went?” " I don't know, but I think I have a clue." “What do you mean… A clue? Did someone take them? As a matter of fact, where were you before you came here to bother my sister? "I was talking to Todd, he just moved in down the street.” “How far away was Todd from where the incident took place.” “What incident?” “Well, you said you had a clue. So I want to know what you were doing before any of these events took place, because if you did something to those poor young boys, you won’t have to worry about law enforcement. You’ll be dealing with me before you deal with them also… The cigarette or blunt or whatever the fuck your holding put it out here on the ashtray I don’t want the house to smell like Marijuana or dog piss.” "I swear I didn't do anything, '' Todd said he saw the kids walking down the street and after they turned the corner, he saw a bright red light come down from the sky. It shined down right where the kids would have been walking. That was the last time anyone saw them.” Lana pulls Sean aside “Look, you saw what he saw, those insects weren’t normal, you saw the shining light, you have to believe that somethings out there.” “Look Lana, I understand this but... In this scenario you also have to question people, this guy.. Is a bum, the way he plants his feet on that $500 table that Scott just bought and smoking a blunt in the fucking living room? He’s a wack job Lana, he could’ve hurt, killed, raped or robbed those kids.” Lana sighs “Look I know Eddie and I understand that he has issues but he is no killer, he’s too much of a wuss to even punch me. But we have to take his word for it. Just this once.. Something is definitely out there and it’s causing problems I mean for fuck sake our power went out.” Eddie walks into the kitchen "Hey guys, I can bring Todd over to tell you what he saw." " He's always out there, watching the sky." " He's seen a lot." “Oh I bet he has.” says Scott “Ah, great here comes the conspiracy theorist, what's next Scotty? Gonna theorize about how much patience I have to listen to this pothead talk about our next special on the discovery channel?” Sean says sarcastically “No, I came to talk about where the kids may have gone. I spoke to Todd this morning and he told me that a Tornado came and swept them away.” Sean pauses “Huh, well I guess Dr. Doofenshmirtz over here is innocent but how do we know that it was a tornado that took them?” Scott responds “ Ya know for someone who calls me a conspiracy theorist you sure do know how to come up with new ones. Anyways Todd told me the Tornado went south.” “He said he'd never seen anything like it before, it moved so fast”.”almost like it was aiming for them specifically”. Scott walks outside the house “Todd said that the tornado was headed south but how far south? Did it only go a certain distance? Where did it stop?” Lana subtly approaches Scott “Scott, maybe the people in town know about it, I think we should head there.” “You may be right, tell Sean to get in the car, I think it’s time for a road trip.” Lana packs her things as well as Scott and Sean. “Can I come with you guys?” Sean laughs “ahhh no, you can pack up and go back to your house.” Eddie sadly walks away “Alright then… See you around.. I guess…” “God damn it fine, you can come with us but just don’t smoke up the car.” “Gee, you most certainly have a problem with smoking, what did weed ever do to you?” Sean looks back at Eddie “What the fuck kind of question is that?” Everyone begins to pack up as everyone enters the car with Lana being the driver. Lana then starts the car and heads to town.

March 14th, 2012 It’s my bathroom he’s in, but I’m at work, so I didn’t know that yet. Being a bouncer can fucking suck at times. It’s not because I'm a woman, though that doesn’t help. It’s more about the fact that where I work, The Vibe, is a dump.

Real Dreams
This day was like any other over the years before, except for the feeling of discontent. Molly wanted to go to the new world. She wanted to snatch up all it had to offer and more. They called her "New Money". She never liked that term. The term that told a story of her past, the one that meant so much to her before her mother had sold her to the man, she now calls her husband. Not that he was a bad man.... she just didn't love him. She longed for the country again, the feeling of the cold ground beneath her feet. The grass between her toes and the hair from the willow tree falling lightly in front of her face as she walked underneath it. That was the feeling of home. Her hope was that by traveling like so many others to this new world, she might find that feeling again. Lost in the memory of what was she didn't hear her husband call her name, "Molly, molly sweetheart come along! We are going to miss our ride.", James called from the carriage. Molly turned her head to face this monster of a ship. She was ready for a change, but she felt apprehensive at the same time. Everything in her body was screaming at her not to board the ship. She did not understand. She wanted this, so why was every fiber of her being telling her not to? They called the ship "unsinkable" that had to stand for something. Right? So, Molly sluffed off the feeling and headed with James by her side to the boarding dock. Once on-board Molly and James were directed to their room, and promptly introduced to the crew, walking around on a tour of the behemoth of a ship they now stood on. The ship that would leave a scar in our history, never to be erased. Molly walked around taking in the biggest ship known to the world. The Titanic. The ship that was called "unsinkable" just 4 days before tragedy. These days were spent in peace and happiness, with dreams of the future. Elegant dinners and high society. Beautiful surroundings and fake people. Molly didn't care though; she was just as content not speaking to them. She only did it for James. Who she believed really did love her and in time she could learn to love him too. When Molly and James went to bed that night they never could have imagined what lay ahead. Molly didn't understand why but for some reason that feeling came back to her, the fear and anxiety of the ship itself. Why? She followed her normal nightly routine of getting ready by brushing her hair and getting her nightgown. She lay down next to James and he put his arm around her in a spoon. She felt his warmth and let it comfort her. Sinking into him. She closed her eyes and let go of the day that had played out in front of her. As she drifted off to visit the sandman, she thought she heard screams? Was that correct...."No she must be hearing things." she thought. At that she was gone, lost in the world of dreams. Then violent vibrating, frantic knocking at the door, she was hearing screaming now. Fear....just fear. There was something in the corner of her room. She stared. Trying so hard to focus on what it was that she was seeing. It looked like a human but not. Black in color, taller than any man she had ever seen before but a man shape none the less. It almost seemed to stare back at her. She took a step closer, never removing her eyes from this figure. (She had seen them before. They usually hid around a corner peeking at her from the shadows. She chose to ignore them and continue her day. James never knew.) It stood firm. "What do you want?", She thought loudly at this thing. Words filled her brain; she had an answer. "It must be done." Molly blinked. She thought again, "What must be done?" Nothing....no answer Again, "What must be done? Answer me! She demanded in thought, "What is happening?" Molly was not sure how to take this answer. She had never "spoken" to them before, if that's what you wanted to call it. Another violent shake and she was being told to go upstairs. She couldn't do it though, nobody else saw this thing but her. How could that be? As Molly turned, she could see her James lying in bed as if nothing had happened. As if there had been no violent shaking in her room, no screaming from nearby and no pounding on the door. Then it went quiet, time seemed to slow, and she could hear nothing as she moved her eyesight back to the figure from her husband's still form. She heard that same voice in her head as before, " I do not control what happens Molly. I cannot create nor prevent this event from unfolding, fate is what is at work here and in this you shall be remembered, you will never die. We are all here Molly." But Molly had not considered being a legend, in fact she didn't want that. She just wanted to make it to the new world. She wanted to fulfill her heart's desire. Home. Before she even understood what was happening, she was standing on the main deck. Everyone was scrambling to get to a lifeboat, to get off the ship. As Molly looked around, she could see so many of these dark shadow people. Most of them standing by a single person. They did not move from the person they had choose. Staying close by with a hand on a shoulder or around a waist. Molly did not understand, she was so confused about all this. Molly felt hands on her back pushing her towards one of the lifeboats, to join the other women and children onboard. She continued to look around as she walked with one of the crew members to the safety of the lifeboat. She had never seen so many of these beings before. She could not even count them. Molly tried to stop but the hand on her back would not allow her to do so. She approached the edge of the vessel and was told to step up into her salvation. She would not die tonight. As she sat down tears filled her eyes, where was James? She had not thought about him since she had appeared on deck. Thats when she realized how much she really did love her husband. He had become her best friend. Despite all the chaos, her world went quiet again and she felt heavy drops exit her eyes and run down her cheeks, flowing freely down her face as she remembered the feelings 4 days before. Molly could not breathe; her chest was tight, and she could not relax enough to think straight. So, she closed her eyes to center herself and that's when she swore, she could her James. Her husband's amazing voice talking to her. She felt a hand on her face and lightly she heard her name again in Jamese's voice. Molly opened her eyes and was face to face with her husband. There was no lifeboat. She no longer sat in the middle of the ocean. Molly now found herself in the carriage next to James. He looked so different to her now. Now that she knew her life would be forever changed. Molly leaned into her husband and kissed him softly. Stepping out of the carriage, she faced her fate. Even though she knew it would end in tragedy Molly was prepared. She took a deep breath and proceeded on with James by her side. Olivia lifted her head and took a breath. She knew reading Candice's diary was wrong, but she had to know what was bothering her daughter so much. Now that she knew the truth of what Candice had been going though, she had to help her baby. Candice, her beloved daughter was once the "unsinkable" Molly brown. Olivia knew this in her heart. Both of their lives would change, but first acceptance.

The Things we Find, Chapter Two
For Neetra it was business before pleasure. She spent the rest of the day looking over what Joe had brought back for her, which she had to admit was romantic in its own way, though the real romance kicked off later when she gave each of her Christingles a new candle and took a long preparatory bath in the best galactic mud. It wasn’t that the transition to her little-girl self was temporary. Neetra felt she owed it to her fringe-and-pigtails persona to do what that one had dreamed of, and liked to keep lines of communication clear to her throughout.

The Things we Find, Chapter Three
As soon as Croldon Thragg wasn’t quite so busy Joe was going to propose the construction of a bridge between Nottingham and the factory. Our hero envisaged everything being in walking-distance one day. Next morning however, while such plans were still on the drawing-board, he let his rotor-blades take the strain and took the Valour up while Neetra still contentedly snored.

The Things we Find, Chapter Four
As soon as Joe’s plans were known in Nottingham, a change came over the city. Neetra felt it as she walked to the Media Centre one evening, brownstone edifices on either side of her shading in tone with the reddening russet sky, their portals and window-arches already black. There was more in the air than autumn leaves. It reminded our heroine of the long-ago October she created Nottingham on Earth, just as it was perhaps this Nottingham’s first October now. Destiny somehow always seemed to come into that time of the year. On the outside steps stood a figure and a membrane Neetra knew well.

The Things we Find, Chapter Five
Nottingham’s Mini-Flashes flocked to the cinema when the advertised hour came. It was a tunic-and-pants convocation on the grandest scale yet seen, and every row and box and gallery tingled in the softly-lit hush. There were people and beings besides Mini-Flashes too, helping crowd the auditorium to capacity, all called to this spot on this night by the prospect of thirty-seven seconds which might bridge that far lengthier duration between then and now.

The Great Sinking. Top Story - April 2022.
The hold was cramped and colder than I would have imagined it was although, considering that I was not even supposed to be on such a mythical boat to begin with, it was a miracle in itself. The cramped room however was not the height of luxury that this boat of miracles was made out to be. The smell of dirty bodies and the sounds of growling stomachs were like that of a strange song or of a dance that I had yet to know the words of.

The Voice of Violence is Silence
Disclaimer: I love reading, I love science fiction. I came across an old, tattered copy of Octavia Butler's "The Patternmaster" and though I had read this book many years ago, I re-read it. It inspired the following pondered thoughts. I figured why not share them with you?
