Love
Do You Love Me
I got this for you! I said almost yelling! "I cannot accept it," she said as I slid the heart-shaped locket that had her name engraved across the counter. After what seemed like an eternity of back and forth, she took the locket and put it to the side of the counter with reluctance. I stood there feeling like a zombie. I felt like someone had pulled the wool from my eyes, I felt that I was the bud of all jokes. Could this be real? Could this be happening? The woman I had just declared my undying love to not only a few months ago was shattering my heart into tiny confetti-like pieces.

Her & I
Her chest felt pale and sticky under me as I was sinking into her. If you were to lift me, I’d leave a heart-shaped mark on her chest. It was my spot; It showed that I will always be there with her. Speaking of heart, I remember when hers used to beat. It was when she was with her family. I’m talking about before she tested positive, before her coughs, before her fevers, and before her pneumonia.

Happy Earth Day
It’s Earth Day, 7 A.M., 2092. Morgan hands me a small box with my name on it in faded ink. It’s cute, sure, but I hate gifts. Morgan knows I hate gifts. Who has the time? I sit up in my cot and accept his present. Violent explosions and the sounds of whirring missiles shooting by our shelter vibrate the very air around yet here he is, box in hand. Smile on face.

Scarlet
Before I met Natalie, I thought of weddings as selfish affairs. Only the married folks in attendance can really appreciate all of the expensive, colorful things on display. The rest of us just sort of sit and wait for the thin slice of enjoyable time between the ceremony and the part where everyone who sees in color takes over the dance floor. Then we watch them glide around in black and white. It's unbearably classy.

Love as Fuel for Living
A peaceful day fishing with Angel… sure, she was annoyed because we were late to the docks and she was hungry. And maybe I’m not the best at planning events, but it’s the thought that counts, right? We didn’t come across a lot of fish that summer day in June, but man I did feel more in love than I ever felt in my life. God, I miss that woman… I can hear her voice speaking to me now… “Baby I love you,” in a sort of melancholy, sing-song tone that is layered with her acknowledgement of the mistakes of my past. “Baby, I love you.” “Baby, I love you.” “Baby, the island man.” Okay now I’m confused… “A remote island, man!” I awoke, startled, to Jack pacing around our shelter. He stops, turns to me, and opens his eyes wide. “Man, you know how much of the world is still undiscovered? I mean, I remember reading about some guy from like 50 years ago who took a boat off the shore of Mexico and was lost at sea for over 400 days. Over 400 days, man! That’s more than a year. No one was able to find him until he landed in the Marshall Islands.” “Can I have a second, Jack… I just woke up” I mumbled, almost incoherently. I haven’t been sleeping much lately. Jack comes closer. “No man, you DON’T get it. We could get a boat --a nice boat-- and just leave this place. No one would find us. We could find an uninhabited island. Live our lives out. Maybe bring some girls with us.” I had heard enough. “Get a fucking grip. We have to get to the safe zone.”
