Love
The Violin
Abbie blew the dust off the old beaten case. The musty attic was cramped and smelled like old newspapers. She had never been up there before, and by the layer of dirty powder covering everything, she guessed no one else had either. She was visiting her grandpa’s house with her little sister Sylvie while their mom went on a business trip. The last time they had visited was five long years ago. She was 12, Sylvie barely six.

One More Time
The world spins and sways, sparkling stain dresses and black suits. Champagne circles round. I grab a flute of the liquid gold and swing it back. The ballroom is a chessboard. My eyes follow the pieces sweep to and fro with the Russian Waltz rendition of Briteny Spears' “Baby, One More Time”. Desereè is one of the pawns. I spot the head of auburn hair and the pink rose dress. A breath escapes my lungs.

The Woman with the Blue Umbrella
Our destinies are determined for us. My ex used to say that your choices don’t matter because your destiny already has its own outcome. She would say that nothing in the universe can change your fate. I almost started to believe her, in all honesty. I almost fell into that same depressing narrative she had. But at my lowest, I met the woman with the blue umbrella.

The Little Things
It was always the little things. The rogue strand of red hair reaching high for the dim yellow light of morning. Freckles lifting as she sneered down at the breakfast I had prepared. The vile way her molars chomped on cereal. Milk splattering to the table. Drying. Sticky on my fingers as I cleaned up her mess. The image was so clear in my mind that when my alarm twanged its little tune, I jolted as though I could already hear the smack-smack-smush of breakfast.

Evan
I was broken yet again. I didn’t want to be broken. I long for him to put back the pieces that he had so carelessly dropped on the floor and left behind. After a week of total silence, I texted him to let him know I was on my way. I explained that I had planned a date at a local movie theater for that evening and that I expected him to show up. I had prepared a letter of everything I wanted to say to him just in case I couldn’t get it out.
