The Lion's Hunt: Part 9
Click Here for Part VIII or Click Here to Start From the Beginning. PART IX Lieutenant Rekla'Kyuul anticipated Etom' moving to use the detonator, knew the movement would be immediately punished, so the Lieutenant moved to protect the Commander. Rekla' was in the path of the sniper's shot in a flash. The blast overpowered their armour’s outer layer, effortlessly plunging through the protection and hitting Lieutenant Kyuul squarely in the chest, in place of Commander Vyuum. Blood sprayed, and Rekla's body slammed against the floor with a thud that vibrated through the metallic platform, and through Etom'Vyuum's soul. Etom's screech was choppy and high-pitched, lost to emotion as the Commander rushed to Rekla's side. Blood poured from the new chest cavity but there was little that Etom' could do. The wound was fatal, and the inner layer of the armour could do nothing to stem the bleeding as Rekla'Kyuul tried to breathe through the pain.

Of Love and War
The moon clears the last wisps of cloud drifting near the horizon and breaks through the tangle of branches overhead, shining silver light into the clearing of the woods. Mirion lies on his back, one arm thrown over his head and the other on top of layers of silk robes, staring straight up at the sky, listening to the quiet crystalline sound of water in the brook, and the louder, unearthly sound of voices drifting on the wind, mingled tenors and altos. He raises one hand and squints his other eye shut, covering the moon with his thumb and staring at the stars, watching as they wheel overhead in their slow dance.

The Merrow
A boy stood thoughtfully on the shores of a smooth, grey lake, skipping stones and contemplating the early morning mist. His sister sat some yards off, cutting and weaving reeds into a flute. Their house still further off, just barely winking in their sight, where their mother and father tended the garden.

The Forest Wolf
Sunlight flickered through the canopy of leaves above, through the swaying treetops, filtering golden light onto my path. They seemed afire, the treetops, all red and orange and yellow, and now and then the wind would glide past and make their dying leaves loose themselves and flitter down in silence like gentle rain. The fallen Autumn leaves carpeted my path, and my footfalls made a mashing sound upon them as I trod along. I continued on this path, winding between pillars of Oak and Birch and Evergreen, and reveled in the fragrance of them with every deep breath. Scents of green, fresh, living things mingled with brown, molding, dying things. I could smell the rich and living earth beneath me, aromas of minerals and growth. I walked, on and on, into the darkening, damp woods. The trees followed me, whispering to each other my progress along the path. I felt them close in behind me, spreading their branches out, around, and above me. Perhaps sheltering me, perhaps trapping me. I felt they were still deciding what to do with me. A strange stillness fell around me, a hushed and suspended silence. It seemed to me the Forest was holding its breath, wanting to reveal itself fully to me, but waiting…waiting for permission, maybe. I carried on, deeper into the shadows, swallowed further by the thickening woods with every step. I could not stop nor turn back. I would have to harness my mounting fears and hold fast to the trail. Dusk had fallen. The woods came down and around me, trapping me in a globe of darkness. My skin quivered at the chill wrapping around me. It would soon be too dark to see. Nevertheless, I continued along the leafy trail and promised myself I would be safe as long as I did not stray. I held my hands down at my sides and slightly away, feeling for branches and bushes sticking out into my path. As my hands and fingers groped in the dark, I suddenly felt something brush against me. It moved under my left hand, tickling me. I felt the heat from its body rising into my palm. I reached for it and felt coarse fur mixed with soft. Its muscles and bones rose and fell beneath its skin as it aligned its steps with mine. I could not see it fully for the darkness, but I knew it was an enormous and powerful animal. My intuition told me it was a wolf. I looked for its eyes and found them looking up at me, glowing like embers in a fire. Suddenly, I knew him. I knew I had always known him and I can’t explain how I understood this, I just did. It was like being told a Truth I had always sought. He was there for me. I closed my hand into his shoulders, into a handful of his fur and held on. I let him guide me along the path. The way ahead was black, and though my eyes were as wide as they could be, I could see nothing around me, only blackness, only uncertainty. But the wolf was there, and I was not afraid. I knew I would be protected from any lurking harm and led somewhere safe. We walked together all night long until the forest began to fill with golden light again. A new day was approaching. Birds suddenly appeared, flitting tree to tree above our heads, chirping and singing their full-throated songs as they followed us. Deer fed on soft grass sprouting up through the fallen leaves, their soft brown eyes watching us with curiosity, then resignation, as we went by. They were not in the least afraid of the human woman or the wolf walking with her. We finally arrived at an opening and looked up at the sky. The rising sun pressed away the night’s waning garb of violet and deep blue as it spread its cape of soft pink and yellow across the horizon. We walked to the edge of a promontory jutting out over a vast lake encircled by snowy-topped mountains. The lake was like a plane of glass, its surface mirroring its surrounds. I stood still, breathing softly, in and out, in and out, inhaling all the still, silent calm my eyes beheld. The wolf sat at my heels and leaned against my legs. I sat down with him and we both took our rest. I felt the power of the wolf next to me, the one who had delivered me from the dark forest, from my fear, and brought me to this place… this place that seemed the home of our Creator. My wolf sat with me there until I awoke, curled and comfortable in the blankets and pillows of my bed.

Hell: From One to Another
In the usual dark alley way where I always sleep at night there was a strange man, very very strange. It was quite odd as I'd never seen him before, but he was standing over my little makeshift home and it seemed like he was investigating it. I stood there watching what he was doing a bit longer, and then I started to dash the other way. I was not about to get caught again by another adult. After all, they all just take me to the police station where the police just send me back to my abusive stepfather. Of course all he knows how to do is beat me with his beer bottles, and tell me I'm better off dead and should've never been born. It's literal torture being there, so there's no way I'd let myself be caught. I keep running and start to turn the next corner, but with my bad luck, I think the strange man heard me and started to chase after me because suddenly I feel a hand grab my shirt which forces me to stop. He then looks at me and asks, "Who are you?" in a really deep voice which made me freeze up, but I manage to stutter my name, "Az.. Azrael." I reply. "So Azrael," the man says, "Why were you spying on me?". With the way he said those words, I felt like he was going to strangle me to death if I said one wrong thing. That's why entire body is shivering right now. I reply with, "You.. You were standing over my living space, and I was wondering what you were doing." He stares at me with his seemingly lifeless eyes and asks, "How old are you?" I say, "I'm 10 years old." The strange man then looks at me and says, "Would you like to be my son?" I had to process what he said for a moment, because those words really confused me, like why would anyone want me as their child. So I replied, "Why?" because he can't possibly be saying that out of good will. He then said, "Because I need an heir to take over my responsibilities." His response still didn't clarify, so I said, "What responsibilities?" The strange man then let out a malicious grin and said, "If you agree, then I'll tell you." Those words sounded really suspicious, but I replied with, "Ok, I agree to be your son." After all, I have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Anyways, after I agree, he pulls out his phone and types something, then after a few minutes he calls someone, so I decide to sit down on my makeshift bed inside my little box home. Shortly after I sit down a black SUV pulls up. The man then says to me, "Get in." So I get in, and put my seat belt on and then the driver starts driving, and I had no idea where we were going. That's when my thoughts started trailing off by saying things like, "What if you're being kidnapped?" or "What if he takes you straight back to your stepfather?" I mean like I don't ever want to see my stepfather again, and I don't care less if I'm being kidnapped as long as I can sleep in a real bed for the first time in my life I'll be fine, I still want to know where I'm going though. So I ask curiously, "Where are we going?" The man replies, "To a place where I can legally make you my son."
