The Return of the Beasts
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Yet here in year is 2032; and there be dragons. We faced a pandemic, political turmoil and a million other things that beat us down in the years following 2020. Yet we persevered for a while, riding the waves of randomness that the years brought. But the universe was winding up for a curveball. People joked and theorized back then about the apocalypse and how it might take shape. The fiction based around it was quite entertaining to be honest, but the reality was far more strange then we could ever imagine. The real Apocalypse when it finally came in the summer off 2022 was entirely unpredicted and unforeseen with dragons literally crawling from the depths of the earth like a specter of hell instead of humanity’s hubris.

True Morels. Runner-Up in The Fantasy Prologue.
There weren’t always dragons in The Valley. They only came because I begged them. It was an ordinary day. I had spent it wandering through the Valo Forest looking for my prize: a basket full of elderberries and wild spring onions and true morel mushrooms. The basket tapped against my waist and the muck of the undergrowth squelched beneath the soles of my bare feet. I hurried along the trail back home. Behind me, the sun lay to rest with a final, blood-red flick of flame between the darkened canopies of the forest, which twisted its way up the nearby mountains like the knuckles of a gnarled old man.

Welcome to your new home
There weren't always dragons in the valley. At least that's what mom said. But as I cupped my hands in front of my eyes, I used my makeshift hand binoculars to try and see one for myself. Everyone else was terrified that the rumours were true, but I was eager to see one up close. Mom said someone probably made the whole thing up, but I knew she just hated to think that it might be true. That it wasn't just a lie told to scare, or entertain, the town kids.

Dragons Ascent
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Their numbers having boomed, from practically extinct to thriving, in the past five years. When the pythoness Mabegold had risen to High Witch she had banned the slaughter of dragons and other such creatures, on penalty of death. What was a popular decision at the time, was now a source of contention for her subjects as they negotiated a new lifestyle among predators. As I stood on the precipice of the valley entrance and looked down, I had to agree that life was getting dangerous.

Roland and the Rose Princess:
One fall morning, I heard my stepmother call for me from the kitchen. Her calmness causes a stir inside my core. “Gisela, she growled, here is a spoon for you.” The warm water flung off the spoon sprinkling droplets on my face. I squinted from the unexpected shower that greeted me like the day. “The pond that rest on the edge of the garden, you must empty the pond out by hand. Again, she warned, if the task is not done by nightfall, you know what will happen child.”

The Valley of the Pionia Tirakian
There weren’t always dragons in the valley… that’s what the elders tell us. The elders have been around Pionia Valley for hundreds of years. They tell us stories of a time when there were tall buildings and things called automobiles. People did not believe in magic or dragons, unicorns or fairies. They flew in aero planes, not on the backs of dragons or unicorns. People did not have wings or do spells. My favorite is the story about when the dragons appeared, and magic took over the world. The elder was telling this story now, as we listened intently.

The Beat of Leathery Wings
“There weren't always dragons in the Valley,” this being said by our village Elder Everwind, “Was it not that long ago that we thought them only as legends of the old ages?” He looked about the semi-dark of the tent interior, at the worried faces of the village elders. We were convened in emergency council to address the coming of the dragons. The council was attended by the elders of all of the families in the center house, a large tent structure used for village functions and meetings. Torches lit the darkness, casting warm light across the worn faces of the elders as they engaged in a contentious discussion. There was much disagreement over what course to take in dealing with the threat of dragons. Our village mage Maythorn was being interrogated by several elders, who seem to regard her as something of a major Wizard, mostly due to her being adept at the healing arts. She is yet wise and honest and can debate with the best of us, but she was no Wizard.
