Nova

A Supervillain in the Making

By Samantha SmithPublished about a year ago 1 min read

She’d pushed it too far. Dawn had told her to stop, but she hadn’t listened. She’d flaunted her powers instead. It was because of her that they locked them away.

Dawn had never trusted them, not completely, but Nova was so relieved that they’d found a place to belong, that she’d finally learned how to control her power. Her and her sister didn’t have to cower anymore, to beg for shelter. They could wield any power they wanted. Multiple powers at once. The Empath and the Mimic.

But that put a target on their backs, and Nova refused to see it. She didn’t see it until their own friends forced Dawn to her knees and put a syringe in Nova’s neck.

At first she was relieved they were alive, even if they were locked in a cell. But then they were given to Rook. The humans had given him free range to conduct his experiments, so long as he would use his mind control when they asked. And when by a stroke of luck, Nova’s power guarded her mind against his, he used Dawn against her. Her own sister became her torturer as Rook laughed in the background. She wished her so-called friends had killed her instead.

When her rescuer came, Nova was in so much pain, she couldn’t move, couldn’t cry out as they saved her and not Dawn. It wasn’t until hours later that they realized they saved the wrong twin. She watched as horror filled their eyes, and she screamed, demanding they go back for her sister, but it was too late. The humans had taken Dawn and Rook somewhere else, somewhere she couldn’t find. But she would burn down cities to find her. Nova could become a monster if she had to, and she did.
