Rook
A Supervillain's Origin

There had always been powers that were more accepted than others, and the world had never been kind to people it feared. Foolishly, Rook thought people would see beyond his power, but even his parents thought someone with mind control could never be trusted.
He didn’t use it on people, not unless asked to, not unless it was for one of those missions that the director forced him onto. But that didn’t matter, and the foolish kid that he was, he mistook being used as a weapon for being valued. It was because he wanted to be valued so badly that he didn’t see it coming.
They failed in the first attempt to kill him. Made to look like an accident, they sent him on a mission to destroy a supply of the human sector’s weapons. He was supposed to support another student as she rigged it to blow. But Rook felt the presence of the third and took over their mind just before they could shoot him in the back of the head. Rook made them shoot themself instead.
Maybe it was then that the paranoia took over, paranoia that slipped into madness, into rage when they sold him to the human sector, an offering to show they were willing to trade one of their most dangerous, so long as their own freedom was unchecked.
For that he hated them. The humans may think of him as a weapon, but at least they didn’t discard him, like a rabid dog sent to a farm. The humans promised he could play to his heart’s desire. And so he did. They gave him other heroes, weaklings he could play with, whose minds he could bend and break for fun. Hatred became an awful lot like a purpose.

Back to say "congratulations" on the first place win for the "Most Emerging Creators" on the leaderboard this week. Well done!
I love this, so dark and full of twists, a superweapon. Congrats on the TS and good luck on the challenge! 🙏😁
Nice and perfect. Congratulations 👏.
Oh that last line. So often.
"Hatred became an awful lot like purpose." I LOVE this line. so powerful. Well written!
I kind of want to know how old he is, wether he really is inexperienced in life and easily manipulated, and when the truth of giving in to the power as his superiors have, slaps him in the face.
A brilliant take on the given prompt. Congratulations on the Top Story.
Oh this was brilliant! Rook is a genuinely terrifying villain, like Professor X going off the deep end. I especially loved that last line! Very much a story of the child rejected by the village burning it down to feel its warmth
Oh, this was quite compelling and a bit sad. I loved the last line!
