I remember the moment my voice disappeared. Not lost. Taken. I know where it is.

Florence. A humid afternoon, metallic clouds building. An encounter on a deserted street.

She was ethereal. Our eyes locked: my mind stilled. Wraith-like, she floated towards me, linear in her path. I felt her breath, cooling my skin.

She lifted her fingers, stroked my neck. A thunderclap, a hammering of rain and she was gone and my voice with her.

Who was she? I don't know. But now I spend my wretched days, roaming the Earth, searching for the woman from the streets of Florence.

Love this Rachel!! It kind of felt metaphorical for that moment when you start editing a story and realize you've lost the narrative voice you intended the story to have! Beautiful!!

What a visual dream …..or nightmare. “Ethereal and wraith-like”…..Loved this drabble so much.

  • I love the sparse and beautiful language and the way it's tied to such a evocative location. Powerful and gorgeous.

  • Oh wow, I thought it was Ursula and Ariel until I read the prompt! Loved your story!
