Lights Out

An Outdoor Story

Streetlights In Fog

He didn't know why he was outside.

He had been putting the bin out for the dustbinmen tomorrow but he looked down the road, and he was sure there was something odd going on.

There was fog, and there were no cars or buses, not even anyone walking up or down the street. At first, he couldn't see any light at the bottom of the street.

He put it down to the fog and the fact it was dark.

But then the next set of house lights and street lights went dark, like a malevolent shadow moving up the street towards him.

An icy hand gripped his heart.

He knew he should go in, close the curtains and hopefully it would pass, but he was paralyzed.

The lights kept going out or getting snuffed, he wasn't sure which, but it was happening.

It was coming closer to him and for him

It wasn't just that the lights were going out, there was nothing beyond the last light, and that nothing was getting nearer.

Should he run? Could he run? Would anywhere be safe?

The last light faded into the nothing.

The nothing was here.

It touched the footpath he was standing on and he saw it disappearing, disintegrating, into the nothing.

Then it touched him.

He screamed as his hands became nothing.

There was no blood just pain and his final scream which suddenly cut off as the wave of nothing continued devouring everything in its path.
