The Caretaker and the Cave
I grabbed my knapsack, put on my jacket, placed my hat on my round bald head, and picked up my walking stick. My granddaughter, Layla, picked up her bag and put on her hat and jacket too. I had made her a special walking stick that fit her hand just right and was long enough so it stood even with her shoulders. There was a leather strap on the end so she could put her little hand through the strap to help hold onto the stick. We kissed Nana goodbye, stepped outside onto the back porch, and walked down the steps. I pointed to the tallest mountain and said to Layla, "that's where we are headed." It was a beautiful fall morning. The sun was shining and the air was crisp when we neared the edge of the forest. It took a few minutes to find the path and make our way into the forest and once we entered, we felt like we had stepped into a magical land.

A New World
Death. There’s not much life in this world anymore. I struggle to keep the life in this cave I reside in to stay. This world has hardly any food or water left, it's like one big desert. Life is dying every single hour. I haven’t seen any humans in a little over 9 years, just animals. Animals have slowly evolved into new creatures. Some would say the world was taken over by aliens, but I know the truth, I was there.

Acceptance
The night friendly touch creased her body. It knew where she wanted it and it smoothed her, sending shivers down her spine. Tonight, was not about pain or grief. There was enough of that already. Tonight, was about acceptance. Although difficult, she found the spot she needed. The sun's rays of orange and red lite the pathway with the darkening shadow of the night to come. The waves rolled in ever so lightly by the gentle push of the wind. The sand still warm from the sun's unforgiving heat of the day. She wondered until she came to the sand dome that called to her. She sat and allowed the warm sand to warm her against the night's cool breeze.

The Remnants
A boy walks alone through a decaying sandstone city. He carries nothing but tattered rags for clothes, a note and a heart shaped locket. The wind howls through the buildings and kicks up sand into the boys face. He does not react, he had been walking for days, with nothing but his thoughts and memories to keep him occupied. His feet were calloused from the brutal landscapes they had to endure, but the boy kept pressing on. Through desert, and jungle, through rivers and lakes, the boy did not stop. The ruins of the old city brought some comfort to the boy, he knew that some time ago humans roamed this land. This feeling of safety and comfort was ripped away when he started thinking about what had happened to the him and his family in this city Before the boy let his feelings of insecurity degrade to outright fear, he had began thinking of his mission. What had been a few years of travel felt like a lifetime for the boy. He was not wrong in thinking that however, he had been traveling for more than he had been settled. The boy was maybe 17, he had lost track of time after travelling countless landscapes and environments, slaying countless beasts and fellow men alike.

Desperados
Friday 26th of July, 2109. What used to be Tucson, Arizona. The man the others called “Bull Frog” pointed his shotgun at the hydraulic Honky-Tonk piano, which started playing a bluegrass version of “Paint it Black”. He was white, sunburnt, about 6’6”, bald, in his mid-fifties. There was yellow grease on his short beard. There was something deeply perverse about him. It was not hard to tell that the man was jaded by violence. No soul in his eyes no matter how long one would stare into them.

Consumption
If I don't think about it, it can't affect me, right? This isn't my house, this isn't my room. I don't know how I wound up here. There's heat in my chest and my head. I feel like I might hurl. The world around me is completely silent, but the silence is deafening. It's still there, across the room. I know if I look at its face, I'll forget again.
