In The Silence of Fear

Being stranded is never a good thing. But being in the desert? Even worse when your cellphone's battery dies.

Where I was, I wasn't entirely certain of. But, I knew I couldn't stay there for too long. As the heat was getting unbearable and I had nothing to protect myself from the scorching Sun. Nor do I have any water to quench my thirst. Nor food for now or later.

While I walked, I pondered how I had gotten into this position.

The last thing that I remembered was looking out at the sea. Watching the waves while my Dad talked to my Uncle. Something about a party or some such thing. I wasn't entirely paying attention to either of them if I'm being honest. Something that I've been cursing myself since I blacked out on that damned boat.

This place, it would be so much more beautiful if I wasn't in this fucked up position. Maybe.

There were plants that I didn't really recognize as I walked past. Some cacti that I vaguely had. If you asked me what kind they were, I wouldn't be able to tell you. All I know is that they have spines and they're green. There were animals in the distance that I could vaguely make the shape out of. But, I honestly didn't know what they were either. Mostly thanks to being too far away from any of them as I dragged myself through this terrible place.

Then it hit me, I need to check my pockets!

I searched all the pockets of my jean shorts as quick as I possibly could. A bit annoyed with myself for not thinking of doing so sooner. Then again I was sort of disoriented from whatever had happened on the boat. Along with the heat just messing with my mind as I tried to check for anything to use. All I came up were a few things. A small matchbox that I used to light candles on my Dad's boat. A pack of cards that I was planning on using later in the day.

I also found a ball of twine in my pocket that I had no idea what I could use for. Or why I had it either.

Then I found something that made my heart skip a beat. My phone. My phone had been in my pocket and I couldn't stop smiling as I pulled it out. Only for it to falter as I stared at it. Not realizing that it hadn't been charged since yesterday morning. So it was at two percent. Not near enough for a phone call. In fact, I was pretty sure I might not be able to get a call out if I dialed anyone.

I had signal oddly enough. And I was very surprised there was signal, too. Considering where I was.

Then again, I was desperate to get myself some help. If I didn't try to call anyone then who knew what in the Hell was going to happen? I hurriedly unlocked my phone and dialed 9-1-1. Grateful that someone had picked up after a few rings. I was so afraid that the phone would die before anyone could. I tried to tell the operator what had happened the best that I could. And that I wasn't sure where I was but, I was in some desert far away from any major cities. When she tried to ask me if there were any recognizable landmarks, my phone died. In a moment of pure frustration, I almost chucked at the ground as hard as I could. But, decided against it and slipped it back into my back pocket.

Getting rid of my phone wouldn't help me in the slightest bit. All it would do is get rid of my only means of communication. That's as soon as I could find a way to get it charged.

All I had to do was keep it together and keep moving. Praying that the cops or someone would come along soon. That they would find me. Yet, I couldn't. My frustration and fear just kept overwhelming me as I stood in place. Grasping the sides of my head as I screamed as loud as I could. Shutting my eyes as I bellowed,"FUCKING PERFECT! FUCK THIS FUCKING SHIT! GOD FUCKING DAMN EVERYTHING!"

After that, I let out the loudest scream that I ever had done. Not letting out words just screaming nonsense that I couldn't understand. Collapsing to my knees as I kept screaming and screaming for a few seconds. Before I finally managed to get myself under control. Only to be met with echoes of my voice for a few seconds. Afterwards I had just sat in place as I opened my eyes again. Engulfed in the desert's parched silence, I was nothing but another grain of sand in the wind.
