“Oh, cool, a frog,” I said. “I can talk, you know,” the frog said. “Oh, cool. A talking frog,” I said. “You mean you’re not scared? Why?” The frog asked. “I watch fairy tail movies. If I kiss you, will you turn into a prince?” I asked. “Close. A wealthy businessman,” the frog said. I picked up the frog and gave him a smooch. I felt myself shrinking. “What just happened?” I asked. “Oops! The magic turned you into a frog, instead,” the frog said, laughing. “You tricked me, frog,” I screamed. “My name is Fred,” the frog said smugly.

Nightmare City
It all started with the collapse of the government. People stopped paying taxes. Police stopped getting paid and quit working. Laws became unenforceable. People started rioting and looting. Eventually the supplies ran out, and things calmed down when barter started. People were forced to respect each other despite no laws, or starve and die, because nobody bartered with the disrespectful. Payment for food was a simple thanks. The city was still in decay, and an old nuclear power plant leaked small amounts of radiation into our city. Our bodies adapted quickly, though, but now we all looked like hidious monsters.

The fading influence of the radical projects associated with the 1968 generation produced a more careful and restrained scholarly atmosphere. Many historians and social theorists became skeptical of large narratives and universal categories, preferring limited scope and methodological caution. In Germany, this shift took a distinctive form through the rise of microhistory, an approach that emphasizes close attention to sources, local contexts, and everyday life. Microhistorians sought to revive the craft of traditional historiography while distancing themselves from older positivist assumptions. Their work often challenges broad concepts such as capitalism, industrialization, and the state, treating them as abstractions that obscure rather than clarify lived experience.
